Doeren -- Lt. Col. Earl B. Doeren (USAF, Ret.) passed away January 29, 2003. He was 85. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lola Grace Doeren, by only 17 days. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie of Albuquerque, NM; his sons, Stephen, of Springfield, MO, Bruce of Albuquerque, and Bob of Durango, CO; and seven grandchildren. Col. Doeren's life was marked by devotion to family and duty to country. Col. Doeren was born in l917 in De Pere, Wisconsin, to Sophie and William Doeren. His father died during the Depression when Earl was only l2, the oldest of six siblings, and he took on a major responsibility for their care. He was known his entire life for that sense of responsibility, was devoted to his family, and cared for his wife who had diabetes for many years. In World War II he served in the l27th Infantry, 32nd Division,"The Red Arrow", in the Pacific theatre for four years, working in medical units close to the front, and later with some of the earliest deployments of a key new technology, radar. He returned to De Pere after the war, was married, and joined the Air Force, marking the beginning of ever-more-sensitive and important postings when the U.S. and Soviet Union were poised at the brink of nuclear war during the Cold War. He also served in Japan during the occupation and at other front-deployment bases in several states, including Alaska. His last assignment was at the then-new NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) site deep inside Cheyenne Mountain at Colorado Springs, CO. He retired in 1968, and he and his family moved to Albuquerque, where he began a second, civilian career, working for several years for Family Life Insurance. Everywhere he went, from the grocery store to the hardware store on his never-failing Saturday errands, Earl encountered people who enjoyed seeing him and experiencing his quips and sense of humor. He was known for his kindness, his twinkly eyes, his humor, brilliant one- liners. He sang the loudest in church, and knew in every city he lived the best place to get the biggest scoops of ice cream. He loved the Green Bay Packers (during both the great and not so great years), singer Peggy Lee, the big bands, and as a young man was known as a great dancer. He was very intelligent, and read widely about the issues of the day. After he retired, he spent much of his time working the New York Times crosswords and writing highly expressive, colorfully phrased and opinionated letters to editors, political leaders, and CEOs about drunken driving, gambling, the upping of the speed limits and other issues of the day on a 40 -year old manual typewriter he refused to replace with even an electric version. In 2000 he had major surgery, and moved into Mission Manor Nursing Home where he lived two years. He became"The Colonel," a most beloved resident, loved for his kindness, caring, his great sense of humor, his ability to touch people's hearts and lift their spirits and make them smile or laugh. By a vote of the residents, he was crowned"King of Mission Manor". He roamed the halls of the institution in his wheel chair, replete with a purple squeeze-bulb horn, greeting all as if he were the mayor, singing songs he made up and his own favorites. He sang with the pianist whenever he came and got others singing, too. He also loved an occasional outing to a nearby restaurant because it offered something scarce indeed on most menus, his beloved rhubarb pie. His family and friends will miss him greatly, and the love and spirit he brought to their lives. He will be in their hearts forever. Funeral Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, February 3, 2003 at Chapel of Sandia, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE with Fr. Michael Schamp officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Sandia Funeral Care 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 (505) 821-0010
