MICHAEL -- JENNIE MERHEGE Our mother, a sweet angel, left this earth on Ash Wednesday, February 6, 2008. She was born on January 19, 1924, in Santa Fe, NM. As a youngster her family moved to San Juan Pueblo and then to Fairview, NM, where she spent most of her growing up years. She graduated high school from Loretto Academy and worked at various jobs before marrying Arthur Joseph Michael, Sr. of Albuquerque. She bore three children, Arthur Joseph Michael, Jr., Charles James Michael, and Barbara Ann Michael. Arthur and Jennie moved to Santa Fe in 1954. Jennie's last job was as secretary at Alvord Elementary. She loved the staff and students at Alvord Elementary and they loved her. She was known lovingly and respectfully as "Jennie" by staff a students alike. Jennie loved the simple things and the beauty in life. She had a kind heart, a good sense of humor, and much compassion for those in need, gladly giving a helping hand or lending a confidential ear. She lifted the spirits of those who saw her on any particular day with a smile that glowed and warmed people's hearts. She genuinely loved people and encouraged them to pursue their passions and dreams. Many sought and felt comforted by her presence. For many years Jennie lived in the shadow of a neurological disease. She carried on courageously, with dignity, and with kindness, never losing her radiant smile or her sweet and positive nature. Those who knew her during that time will never forget her. Even in the midst of a terrible disease she shared her love, her heart, and her true self with those around her. Jennie loved all of her family and they loved her. She is survived by her children, Arthur Joseph Michael, Jr. and Barbara Ann Michael; her sisters, Jessie Fidel (who was Jennie's guardian angel on earth throughout her life), Mary (James) Million, Helen (Gene) Finch; and her brother, Joseph Merhege; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Family members who predeceased her include her husband, Arthur Joseph Michael, Sr., with whom she will rest at the Rosario Cemetery; her son, Charles James Michael; her parents, Latify and Fidel Merhege; her sisters, Afife Zaunon and Orelia Jabbour; her brothers, John Merhege, James Merhege, Fidel Merhege, Jr., and Michael Merhege. Jennie's beautiful spirit attracted many other beautiful spirits to serve on her caretaking team throughout her illness. These people loved Jennie as if she were a member of their own immediate family and advocated strongly for her needs. They were loyal, diligent, outstanding in skill, and never faltered in providing her with the best care that anyone could receive. The family will eternally grateful to Eloise Garduno, massage therapist, who provided incredible and comforting massages for eight and one-half years; Naomi Roy, personal care provider, who never said no to any request involving Jennie's care, was readily available to assist the family with all emergencies, and who has an unmatched quiet strength of character that comforted Jennie every day; Nellie Nunez, who luckily became a member of Jennie's team three years ago and who brought with her specialized knowledge in the care of the elderly and terminally ill and a smile and positive attitude that matched Jennie's; Jason Schilening, Clear Training Systems, (personal trainer) and Jeff Nailen, Renaissance Personal Fitness (personal trainer), both of whom constantly sought and learned a variety of techniques to work with Jennie as her condition changed throughout time and both of whom are consummate professionals. Finally, the family thanks the professionals at Odyssey Healthcare and Lee Levin, M.D., all of whom worked together to allow Jennie to remain at home until she died, which was one of her three wishes A Visitation will be held Sunday, February 10, 2008, 2 to 5 p.m. at McGee Memorial Chapel. A Rosary will be recited on Sunday, February 10, 2008, 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 11, 2008, 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Rosario Cemetery. HART -- John (Jack) Sommer Hart, 91, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2008 as the result of a stroke. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John was born on June 14, 1916 in Jackson, MI to Earl Moon and Marie Sommer Hart. He attended Michigan State University and graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1939. He earned a Master's degree at Chrysler Engineering and worked in the chemical plating industry in Detroit throughout his business career. John, known for most of his life as Jack, is survived by his beloved wife, Goldie (Judy) Renz Hart whom he married in 1940; his daughter, Valerie; his three granddaughters, Heidi, Christi and husband, Darryl, Mikki and husband Eric; and his great-granddaughters, Abbey and Brenna, all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his former sister-in-law, Joan Hart of Pleasant Lake, MI; two nephews, John Clemons of Mesa, AZ and James Hart of Cedarville, MI; two nieces, Dianne Tisue of Cottonwood, CA and Bonny Hart of NY, NY; and his best friend and golfing partner, Arthur Bodeau of St. Claire Shores, MI. Jack resided most of his career in the Detroit area - Bloomfield Hills - and later working years in Middletown, NJ. After retiring, he and Judy split their time between the cabin they bought in 1948 on Shupac Lake in Lovells, MI and a town home in Carlsbad, CA - enjoying golf, fishing, bridge, their many friends and participating in community activities. Jack and Judy have been residents of La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque since March 2002. Jack's life passion was trout fishing, which he enjoyed in the Ausable and Big Creek streams of northern Michigan by their Shupac Lake cabin, near Grayling. Since retirement, besides fishing, he has taken great interest in the Macintosh computer, which has given him many hours of pleasure and frustration. He has shared his expertise generously, helping many of his contemporaries with their computer issues. He was the patriarch of the family and survived many of his lifetime friends and family. He was an intelligent, articulate man with a wonderful sense of humor who left his mark on all those he encountered during his long life. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Cremation has taken place. LANOUE -- Marion LaNoue, 83, passed away on February 1, 2008. Marion was born in Santa Fe, NM on September 2, 1924. She served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. She graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Master's in Psychiatric Nursing and taught nursing at the University of Albuquerque and TVI. She WAs preceded in death by her parents and a brother. She is survived by her children, Michael LaNoue and wife, Lindi, of Aurora, CO, Steve LaNoue and wife, Tedi Witt, of Albuquerque, Barbara Reece and husband, Doug, of Kahoka, MO; her brother, Robert A. Smith and wife, Rosemary, of Las Vegas, NV; her sister, Virginia Rogers and husband, James, of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. SALAZAR -- Dennis Diego Salazar, 90, entered his eternal life on Ash Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Mr. Salazar was born on December 31, 1917 in Espanola, NM. Dennis spent his early childhood in Espanola and Graduated from St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe in 1935. Shortly thereafter, he began his career as a businessman and manager of several Safeway food stores. Dennis served his country as a radio operator sergeant with the 904th Field Artillery Battalion in World War II with active duty in the European Theater specifically, Normandy Northern France and Rhineland in Central Europe from 1943 until his honorable discharge in January 1946. His decorations included the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Dennis and his wife, Carolyn lived in Albuquerque all of their married life and were always loyal supporters of the UNM Lobo Athletic teams. For many years after his retirement, Dennis was an active member of the Lobo Club. Dennis loved all sports activities and he was also an avid fisherman. Dennis's good-hearted and generous nature was known to all. He is survived by his brother, Ramon Ernesto Salazar of Lompoc, CA; sister, Agnes Salazar Trujillo of Santa Fe; sister-in-law, Tillie O. Salazar of Redondo Beach, CA; nieces, Alicia Meyer and husband, Gary of Mt. Vernon, WA, Exilda Martinez and husband, Ramon of Santa Fe, Debra Kissell and husband, John of Torrance, CA, Teresa Bondelli and husband, Roger of Manhattan Beach, CA, and Rosamond Blevins and husband, Steve of Santa Maria, CA; nephews, James Salazar of Oxnard, CA, Richard Salazar of Thousand Oaks, CA, Larry Salazar of Lompoc, CA, David Trujillo and wife, Rosemary of San Leandro, CA and Tim Salazar and wife, Karol of San Pedro, CA; and many great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Special survivors are Maria Rodriquez and Victoria Reizin who were his caregivers and compassionate friends. BACA -- Cordelia Herrera Baca, 62, resident of Albuquerque, former resident of El Guache, NM, died February 4, 2008 at the family home after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by parents, Alfredo and Mariquita Herrera; brothers, Albert, Fermin and Dennis Herrera; and half brothers, Alfredito, Paul and Clyde Herrera. She is survived by her husband, Joe R. Baca of Albuquerque; children, Bernadette and husband, Paul Chavez, Manuel Herrera, Adrian and Darlene Herrera, Denise and husband, Frank Lopez, all of Albuquerque; three step children, Clara and husband, Joe Dominguez, Frances and husband, Fred Lopez, Michael and wife, Gina Baca, all of Tucumcari; seven grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Dora Serrano of Gallina; brothers, Gilbert Herrera of Espanola, Jose R. SPEARS -- Joe Ann Spears, age 77 a resident of Espanola passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2008. She was preceded in death by a son, James D. Spears Jr. in July of 2000. Joe Ann was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 20, 1930. Her father was Sidney M. Thornell and her mom was Ann. Joe Ann came to New Mexico in 1930. She lived in Espanola most of her life. She also lived in Los Angeles, California during the 2nd World War. She worked in her father's restaurant and fruit stand in Espanola. She met her husband of 57 years in Espanola. They had 3 children, Sydney, Danny and Edward. Joe Ann and Jim raised all three children in a business located on Livingston Street. The name of the business was Spears Welding. She has a loving daughter-in-law, Christine Spears. Her beautiful grandchildren, Shaunna, Nickolas, Casey, Kyle, Jaemi, Ray and two great-grandchildren, Makaeli and Mckenzy. Joe Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. After she sold the business, Spears Welding, she worked for the United States Department of Census, as a Senior Field Interviewer. She retired in January of 2005. She worked for the Census for over 20 years. Joe Ann received many awards and trips for the wonderful job she did for the Census. She loved to read and work cross word puzzles. She also painted with oils. Joe Ann was a workaholic. Cremation is being planned. A Memorial Service will take place on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. STUART -- Kenneth Manley Stuart, 75, passed away January 30, 2008. He was born August 31, 1932 in Long Island, NY to Harold and Ruth Stuart (Manley). Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Pamela J. Stuart and son, James K. Stuart. Kenneth was a Korean War veteran who served in Okinawa with the U.S. Army. Kenneth moved to Rio Rancho in 1973. He was a charter member of the Rio Rancho Elks Lodge #2500 and the first "Elk of the Year", American Legion #118 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5890. Kenneth was an avid softball player for many years. He was a NY Giants, Mets and Knicks fan. Kenneth was the commander of the Rio Rancho Honor Guard. He was very involved in the Parks & Recreation Division with the City of Rio Rancho, and a little league coach for many years in Rio Rancho. A Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m., at the Rio Rancho Elks Lodge, 1530 Barbara Loop, Rio Rancho. ZIMMERMAN -- Carol E. Huffman Carol Zimmerman passed away Friday, February 1, 2008, at her home. She was born February 9, 1945 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and attended Valley High School. Carol met and married Roy L. Zimmerman. They have been married 40 years. Together they raised two children, Kari and Lyle (Barney). She loved spending time with her family and friends; solving difficult levels of crossword puzzles and Suduko, playing board games, bookkeeping, traveling and gardening. Carol and Roy were longtime residents of Brigham City, Utah where Carol managed the bowling alley where she was very active in the bowling community and had many friends. She had learned sign language and enjoyed her work with Special Education bowlers. She is most remembered for her contagious smile and her unending determination to beat cancer. Carol is survived by her husband, Roy, North Ogden, UT; a daughter, Kari (Buzz) Biernacki, Placitas, NM; a son, Lyle "Barney" (Lawna) Oldfield, Easley, SC; two grandchildren, Kylie Oldfield and Blake Oldfield, both of Easley, SC; and a brother, Jim (Sally) Huffman, Tucson, AZ. She was preceded in death by her mother, Delphia Gragg Huffman; her father, James Lewis Huffman; and a brother, Ronald Huffman. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. at French's Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. Friends and family may call at the mortuary on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to Services.
