Saavedra -- Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Efren C. Saavedra will be celebrated Thursday morning, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW, with visitation at the church after 9:30 a.m. Father Larry, Celebrant. Olivas -- Mr. Lawrence Olivas passed away surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bernice Purcella. He is survived by his wife, Rachel Olivas; one daughter, Rose Purcella and her husband, Johnny; two sons, Joe Olivas and wife, Clara, and Larry Olivas Sr. and wife, Mary; his grandchildren, Larry Olivas Jr. and wife, Monica, Joe Olivas Jr. and wife, Kathy, Debbie Sandoval and husband, Ernest, Joe Juan Purcella, Mark Olivas and wife, Renee, and Amarante (Monte) Olivas and wife, Kathy; and his great-grandchildren, Brittnie Sandoval, Monique Olivas, Jacob Olivas, Chantel Purcella, Felicia Sandoval, Rae Ann Olivas, Joe Juan Purcella Jr., Joshua Olivas, Brianna Olivas and Randy Olivas. Mr. Olivas was a veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV. Also an active member of the Pajarito Senior Center. He was the senior of four generations of Olivas. He will be deeply missed by everyone's lives whom he touched, but surely not forgotten. Funeral services for Mr. Olivas will be held on Thursday at the Ascension Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Los Padillas Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Olivas Jr., Joe Olivas Jr., Joe Juan Purcella, Mark Olivas, Amarante (Monte) Olivas and Ernest Sandoval Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Raphael Chavez, Willie (Boleslo) Sanchez, Desiedro Padilla, Ernest Ruiz Jr., Herman Sanchez and Ray Sanchez. A Rosary for Mr. Olivas will be recited on Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m., at the Ascension Church. Arrangements by the Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.

Saavedra -- Mr. Efren C. Saavedra, 75, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on November 29, 1999. Mr. Saavedra was the beloved husband of 53 years to Mrs. Rosella Anaya-Saavedra. He is also survived by five sons, Ruben Saavedra, Efren Saavedra Jr., Richard Saavedra, Paul Saavedra, and Anthony Saavedra and wife, Jennifer; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Saavedra; two sisters, Erna Muniz and husband, Jacinto and Carmen Chavez and husband, Ruben; a brother, Isaac Saavedra; a very special niece, Becky Carrillo; 12 grandchildren, Ruben Jr., Robbie, Richie, Samantha, Clyde, Brittny, Chloe, Savannah, Mackie, Ashley, Cassie and Nickel; five great-grandchildren, Justine, Shyann, Gus, Audrey and Elias; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcelino and Elena Saavedra; a son, Sammy Saavedra; brother, Robert Saavedra; and a sister, Braulia Contreras. Mr. Saavedra was a member of the Catholic Church, veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, a member of the American Veterans Post #7, owner of Efren and Sons Sand and Gravel, past board member of Westland Development Corporation. Efren dedicated his life to his beautiful wife and children. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW, with visitation after 6:30 p.m. Gabriella Nieto, reciting. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW, with visitation at the church after 9:30 a.m. Father Larry, Celebrant. Shoden -- John C. Shoden, 76, passed away at his daughter's home in Albuquerque on November 27, 1999. Mr. Shoden was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1922, the first child of Louella and Clarence Shoden. He enlisted in the Marine Corps as a combat aviator and served with honor and distinction during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After the war, he completed his college studies at the University of Maryland. Fro 1964 to 1967, the Navy appointed him to the post of Assistant Naval Attache in Bonn, Germany. He retired from military service in 1967 in the rank of Lt. Colonel. He later was employed by American Airlines as a flight instructor and engaged in residential contracting prior to moving to Albuquerque in 1987. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan in 1983; and by a brother, Dick Shoden. Mr. Shoden is survived by two daughters, Melinda Davis and husband, Chip and their children, Lauren, Todd, and Erica, and Rebecca Shoden and husband, Larry Ollason and their children, Steve and Jack; and by a son, John Shoden and wife, Shana and their children, Megan and Katherine. A Memorial service is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Friday, December 3, 1999, at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Chaplain Lt. Col. Larry E. Wills, USAF (Ret.) officiating and with eulogy by Hugh Kirkle. Inurnment will be beside his wife in Quantico, VA at a later date. Martinez -- Mr. Richard"Ricky" Martinez passed away at home on Wednesday, November 24, 1999 at the age of 47. Ricky graduated from Valley high School and worked for the City of Albuquerque from where he recently retired after 25 years. he was preceded in death by his brother, Chris Ray Martinez. He is survived by his parents, Chris and Isabel Martinez; his grandmother, Julia Murphy; his sister, Kathy and her husband, Leroy Griego; tow nieces, Maria Victoria and Christina; nephews, Benito Rey and Max Rey; and great niece,Josette. Funeral Services for Mr. Martinez will beheld on Monday at the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Max Rey Martinez, Ramon Lueras, Robert Martinez, Larry Hicks, Benito Rey Griego and Michael Medina. Visitation for Mr. Martinez will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Pirkey -- Helen R. Pirkey, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1972, died Saturday, November 20, 1999. She is survived by her sons, Herbert Pirkey III and wife, Pamela of Denver, CO, David V. Pirkey of Albuquerque, and Gary D. Pirkey of Albuquerque; daughter, Diane K. Nolen and husband, John of Albuquerque; one granddaughter, April M. Nolen of Albuquerque; three sisters, Dorothy M. Davidson and husband, Buddy of Bath, NC, Shirley J. Young and husband, Jarry of Salem, VA, and Joyce A. Harrison and husband, Clinton of Vinton, VA; and brother, Jerry W. Ross of Richmond, VA. Mrs. Pirkey was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Pirkey Jr. in August 1996. She was a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, where she was active in the Ruth Sunday School class, and she was employed at their school as the"nap-lady", helping with the young children. Mrs. Pirkey was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and she was a Red Cross volunteer for many years. She retired from J.C. Penney after 15 years with them. Mrs. Pirkey, a devout Christian mother, is also fondly remembered for her"Teddy bear" collection and for being an avid reader. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3100 Morris NE, with Pastors Larry Miller and Errol Stepp officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Moyer, Ronald Showalter, Mynard Zender, Charles Lowe, James Delleney, and Ted James, Tom Clark and Tommy Donham. Sanchez -- Margarita DeLuna Sanchez, a resident of Alameda, passed away on Friday in Edgewood. She is survived by her husband, Salvador Sanchez of Alameda; two sons, Salvador Sanchez Jr. and wife, Connie of Bloomington, CA, Anthony Sanchez and wife, Mary of Albuquerque; two sisters, Erna Gurule and husband, Pat of Albuquerque, Sally Rangel and husband, Gilbert; and a special niece, Sadie Armijo of Albuquerque. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. Her past 19 years were devoted to her husband as a loving wife and caretaker. She was a member of the Carmelitas and Alter Rosary Society. She was also a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning, 11:00 a.m., at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Interment will follow at San Carlos Cemetery.
