GILLETTE -- Larry Dale Gillette, a longtime resident of Bosque Farms who recently moved to Aurora, CO to be near his daughters, died February 23, 2005 of lung cancer. He was born September 30, 1939 at Grandview, IA at the home of his grandparents, Edith and Elmer Young. Parents are the late L. John Gillette and Ruth Gillette. Larry graduated from Wapello High School in 1957. He then attended Central Technical Engineering School in Kansas City, MO and graduated in 1959. He was employed by Sandia National Laboratories of Albuquerque, NM for 33 years. Larry is the beloved father of LaRae Gabol (Rodney) and Susan Gillette, both of Aurora, CO, and the grandfather of Gage Gabol. He is also survived by his mother of West Burlington, IA; brothers, L. John Gillette Jr. and David Gillette (Sharon) of Muscatine, IA; sisters; Kay Pfeifer (Dan) of Burlington, IA, Phyllis Beik (Dan) of Morning Sun, IA, and Barbara Dieterich of Burlington, IA. Services will be held at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington, IA on March 5, 2005 at 10:00 am., and burial will be at Grandview Cemetery, Grandview IA. HAALAND -- J.D. "Dutch" Haaland, Major, USMC (retired) SEMPER FIDELIS Major J.D. "Dutch" Haaland, retired USMC, died on Saturday, February 26, 2005, two days short of his 69th birthday. Dutch was born in New London, MN, grew up on a farm and moved west when his father followed the ship building industry to San Francisco. He enlisted in the Marines at age 18 and quickly advanced to the rank of Gunnery Sgt. During the early 60s he was stationed at MCRD in San Diego, as a drill instructor. In June 1966 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. He traveled the world on his orders and served two years in Vietnam where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. Heavily decorated, Major Haaland was awarded 15 medals during his career, among them the Silver Star for "conspicuous gallantry" in Con Thien, Vietnam. In the early seventies, Dutch served as the Inspector Instructor at the Marine Corps Reserves in Albuquerque before going to his last duty station, prior to his retirement, in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. He returned to Albuquerque, lived in Florida for a decade, and came back to Albuquerque in 2003. Dutch, a brave soldier and devoted father, is survived by his brother, Conrad Haaland; his wife, Barbara and her daughters, Amy Candelaria and Julie Pratt; his four children, Denise Kirksey, Zoe Magee, Debra Haaland, and Judd Haaland and their mother, Mary Toya; also by his ten grandchildren, and loyal pooch, Sophie. Services will be held at noon Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Strong-Thorne, Coal Ave. east of I-25. His children will take his remains to Arlington National Cemetery in April for full military honors.

LEE -- Auneka Marie Lee born October 15, 1961 in Williamson, West Virginia. Passed away March 2, 2005 in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Kristen; son, Stephen; granddaughter, Jordan all from Rio Rancho, NM. Mother, Joyce Williams of Dryden, Michigan; brothers, Lloyd Alan Casto, of Charlestown, Indiana, Shaun Casto of Martin County, Kentucky, Billy Williams and Ricky Williams of Dryden, Michigan. Auneka has lived in Rio Rancho, NM for the past 18 years. She was an account executive with Mortgage Lenders Network. Auneka created a special bond with each friend she made and there are hundreds. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday March 6, 2005 at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel. LOPEZ -- Emilio "Papa" Lopez, Jr., 69, a lifetime resident of Corrales, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2005. Emilio was born April 30, 1935 the son of Emilio and Josefa Leyba Lopez, Sr. in Corrales, New Mexico. He had been an Assistant Fire Chief at the Kirtland Air Force Base before he retired. He was a member of the San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales; member of the American Legion, Post 69 in Alameda. After retiring, Emilio "Papa" continued with his love of farming at his Corrales home. He is remembered for his wonderful sense of humor; his kindness to others; his generosity and his love for traditions. "Papa" is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Priscilla; three children, Emilio Lopez, III and Dannette Garcia of Corrales, and Dannette's daughter, Mi Cielo; Veronica Lopez and Renee Lopez both of Corrales; seven brothers and sisters, Theresa Borunda, Florence Vasquez, Reymundo Lopez, Aurora Martinez, Jesus Lopez, Geronimita Baca, and Margie Lujan. The Rosary will be recited on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales. Reciting will be Charles Aguilar. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 7, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales with Fr. Clarence Galli as the Celebrant. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 2:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Patrick Baca, Kevin Garcia, Andre Sanchez, Joseph Lopez, Phil Froduge, and Carlos Gurule. MACDOWELL -- Betty Jean Ratcliff MacDowell, 83, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2005. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Milo and Willie Juanita Ratcliff; brothers, Evon Ratcliff and Michael Ratcliff; and sister, Mary Lee Natoli. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Sullivan of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; Francesca MacDowell of Albuquerque; Tani Sue Hyland and her husband, Vincent of Highland, NY; son, John McGinn and his wife, Karin of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Sean and Megan Sullivan, Cody and Kelly Williams, and Katherine, Vincent and Patrick Hyland. Betty was born August 19, 1921 in Clayton, New Mexico. She lived in her beloved Albuquerque in her youth and most recently since 1972. Betty was employed with the Atomic Energy Commission and retired from the Social Security Administration as a supervisor of data processing. Betty was an avid reader, gardener, and loved her crafts. Betty's family would like to especially thank the staff of Heartland Hospice for their thoughtfulness and care. MOFFETT -- Katherine Moffett, 85, a homemaker, of Henderson, NV, passed away Monday, February 28, 2005. She was born January 27, 1920, in Marinette, WI. Formerly a 50 year resident of Albuquerque, she resided in Southern Nevada for 22 years. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, John Moffett; sister, Marion Oakes; and brother, Robert Behrend. She is survived by her daughter, Pattie Roberts and her husband, Harold of Henderson, NV; grandson, Darryl McGinnis and his wife, Janet of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter, Julie Downey and her husband, Brian of Henderson; and great-granddaughter, Hannah McGinnis of Phoenix. MORRIS -- Melvin Lee Morris, 97, of Estancia, NM passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2005 in Albuquerque. Melvin was born on August 24, 1907 in Clovis, NM to Thomas and Letha (Steelman) Morris. He had belonged to the Odd Fellows, the Torrance County Historical Society and he was very well known as "Mr. Estancia". Melvin was the one-handed man who rode a three-wheeled bicycle from Estancia to Moriarty. He also did this feat on his 90th birthday going from Estancia to Moriarty and back to Estancia. Melvin is survived by his brothers, Earnest G Morris and wife, Naomi of Edgewood, NM, and Thomas R Morris and wife, Wanda of Estancia, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Letha Morris; and three sisters, Ruby P. Coones, Goldine Rankin, and Mary Alene Entley. Melvin will be missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be a viewing on Monday, March 7, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM. Funeral Services will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ of Estancia in Estancia, NM. PERKINS -- Clara O. Perkins, 77, a resident of Albuquerque, loving mother and grandmother died Thursday, March 3, 2005. STRINGER -- Anna Louise Stringer of Bosque Farms, NM, passed away at her home February 27, 2005. A resident of Bosque Farms since 1967, Anna Louise loved raising iris, working in her garden, photography, and cake decorating. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Edward Stringer. Born December 7, 1922 in Huntington, West Virginia, Anna Louise is survived by her cousin, Mary Janice Gilmore of Destin, Florida; her grandsons, Phillip O'Neal Willmuth and Cameron Casey Leopold of Bosque Farms; and her daughter, Katy Lent‚ of Isleta, New Mexico. VAN ZELE -- Michael Van Zele, 61, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan; daughter, Courtney Collins and husband, Trigg, all of Albuquerque; son, Christopher and wife, Rachel of Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Van Collins and Hadley Collins and sisters, Martha Goar and husband, Jerry and Susan Van Nuys. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Lyle and Velma Van Zele. Michael was a graduate of Valparaiso University in 1966. He worked in the insurance industry for 35 years.
