Burns -- Preston Edward Burns, 18, of Albuquerque, died November 28, 2002. Born in Albuquerque on October 18, 1984, Preston is survived by his loving and caring mother, Susan (Suzi) Burns; and his"Auntie B," Barbara Grothus, both of Albuquerque; uncles and aunts, Tom Grothus and Wendy Slotboom of Seattle, WA and Mike and Heidi Grothus and their children, Casey and Michelle (MEG) of Niwot, CO;"Poppa and Grandma", Ed and Margaret Grothus of Los Alamos, NM; grandmother, Ruth Davis and family of Wilmington, NC; and many members of his extended family. He was preceded in death by uncle, Ted Grothus. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Preston's longtime mentor, Bill Bordone, of Wise Men, Wise Women, for his unswerving ten-year dedication to Preston. We also wish to acknowledge Leslie and Randy Bush for their commitment to his recent successes. Services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2002 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Friends are encouraged to bring their memories to share with his family. A reception will follow at the Rio Grande Cantina, 901 Rio Grande NW. Graveside services and interment will be held at 3:30 p.m., Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. Howes -- Sen. Gloria Jeanne Howes, 72, of Gallup, NM died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born August 12, 1930 in Decatur, IL. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Retired Senator Gloria Howes was appointed as New Mexico Woman of the Year in 1994 by Gov. Bruce King. She wore many hats throughout her lifetime and was a friend to everyone. Beginning as a teacher with the BIA school for Navajos in Keams Canyon, AZ in 1950 and going on to the Navajo reservation and public schools in Shiprock and Gallup. Howes entered county government in 1988. She served three terms as New Mexico Senator for Cibola and McKinley Counties and retired in 2000. She enlivened those long, late-night Senate Sessions with her wonderful sense of humor that only Gloria could do yet managed to negotiate tough issues with compassion and wisdom. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2002 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Rollie Mortuary, 401 East Nizhoni Blvd., Gallup, NM. Services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1800 Red Rock Dr., Gallup, NM. Rev. Layloni Drake will be officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park on Saturday, December 7, 2002. Survivors include, husband, Douglas Howes Sr. of Gallup, NM; sons, Jeff Carnal of Gallup, Kent Carnal of Henderson, NV, Michael Carnal of Colorado Springs, CO and stepson, Douglas Howes, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Helen Oates of Santa Fe, NM; brother, John Perry of Albuquerque; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Howes was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Ruth Perry; and daughter, Ruth Ann Carnal-Oates. Pallbearers will be Joe DiGregorio, Karl Gillson, Danny Howes, Charlie Kauzlarich, Kevin Marshall and Senator Lidio Rainaldi. Honorary Pallbearers will be Edward T. Martinez -- Toribio (Grandpa Rodie) Martinez, 73, a lifelong resident of Cuba, New Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2002. Toribio was born January 23, 1929 in Cuba, New Mexico. He was a kind, gentle man. He had been a cattle rancher all his life, retiring after 65 years. Toribio enjoyed hunting, was an excellent marksman, loved the outdoors. He was a"true cowboy". Toribio was a Senior Companion for seven years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, NM. He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Martinez in 1984. Toribio is survived by his loving wife, Ramelia of the family home; four children, Patricia Martinez of Albuquerque, Emily Montoya and husband Leroy of Cuba, NM, Anthony Martinez of Cuba, NM, and Amy Martinez of Albuquerque; two sisters, Josephita Herrera and Liva Lucero; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2002 from 5 PM to 7 PM with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, NM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 6, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, NM with Fr. John Boland as the celebrant. Burns -- Preston Edward Burns, 18, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, November 28, 2002.¯ Born in Albuquerque on October 18, 1984, he attended schools in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and San Jose, CA. He recently received his GED, and he was currently enrolled at TVI where he intended to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts.¯His dream was to own a restaurant. Preston was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 13.¯Diabetes is a cruel master that took Preston not piece by piece but whole, as he stood on the threshold of adult promise.¯In 8th grade, he volunteered for Youth Development, Inc. His potential was recognized by YDI when his portrait was selected for their 1998 calendar; his picture (with bleached hair) appeared for the month of May. Preston is remembered for his sense of humor and diverse interests. He regularly experimented with his¯look particularly his hair. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends.¯ He liked cats, reptiles, alternative music, and reading.¯ He had a very sensitive nature. His younger cousins adored him.¯He had a great time on the family's recent cruise to Alaska. O'rourke -- Terrence Robert O'Rourke, 52, passed away at the VA Hospital on Saturday, November 30, 2002, surrounded by his loving family members. Terry was born in Albuquerque, and he served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a plumber/pipe fitter, and was a member of Union Local #412. Terry was preceded in death by his father Jim O'Rourke and is survived by his mother, Eustelle O'Rourke; siblings Rose Ann Alexander and husband, David, Vincent O¯Rourke, Eileen Belmares and husband, Joe, Sheila Walker, Kevin O'Rourke and wife, Ann, Joe O'Rourke and Angie, Mary Kay O'Rourke, Theresa Hill and Tom, Dennis O¯Rourke, Patrick O¯Rourke, Rita Pecos and husband Joe; 19 nieces and nephews; two grand-nephews; numerous other family and friends who loved and will miss him. Salazar -- Lorella M. Salazar, age 77, went to be with her Lord, Saturday, November 30, 2002. Lorella was born February 7, 1925 to Tomas O. Montoya and Frances DeLao Montoya. Lorella is the last of the Montoya political dynasty -- Her brothers, Tom Montoya, State Representative Teddy Montoya, State Representative Alfonso Montoya, United States Senator Joseph M. Montoya; her sisters, Agneda Montoya and Virginia Chavez all preceded her in death. Lorella loved life and life loved Lorella. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Lorella is survived by her son, Tom J. Salazar and his wife, Gail Salazar; her brother-in-law, Tony Chavez; her nephews, Patrick Montoya, Phil Montoya, Joe M. Montoya and Teo Montoya; her nieces, Alicia Montoya and Lynda Montoya-Haran. Rosary will be recited Tuesday, December 3, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 4, 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo with Fr. Virgil officiating. Boatman -- E. Bobbye Boatman, 91, a long time resident of Santa Fe and Albuquerque, passed away November 21, 2002. She was born March 19, 1911, to Frank and Eszter Mile of Kitchener, Ontario and was married to Dr. L.C. (Larry) Boatman in Santa Fe in 1951. Her last employment during a career as an executive secretary was with the NM Synod of the Presbyterian Church. In Santa Fe, her activities included the Toastmistress Club, choir of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a frequent soloist, Garden Club, creative cooking, and hosting events, such as the Convention of the NM Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, in which Dr. Boatman was active. In Albuquerque, Bobbye was an early and enduring member of the First Church of Religious Science and an avid student of Science of Mind. She is survived by her children, Diane Boatman, of Accord, NY and Dorothy Boatman, of Madison, WI; 6 grandchildren, Donna Gray, Kirsten, Eddie, Mattie, Larry, and Edna Hogan; 7 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Louis, Steve, Charles, Gordon, Margo Scargall, Elaine Lampman, and Eileen Lang; nieces and nephews, Hilda Scott, Edward Mile, Bonnie Lou Novack, Jane Chance, and Donald Chance, Jr.; and many grand nieces and nephews. Special friends included Pat and Bob Gooch, Dot and Tom Tennies, Joyce and George Hudson, Barb and Bob Pixton, Bill and Doris Weaver, Norm and Barb Dawson, John Bundock, Esther Boatman, and Mary Karmody. Her parents, husband, and siblings, Frank, Juliana Chance, Peter, and Alex, preceded her in death. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at 11 a.m., at First Church of Religious Science, 3320 San Pedro Blvd. NE, with Rev. Patrick Pollard officiating.
