SANCHEZ -- Sally S., 80, a resident of Belen, was called home by the Lord on Friday, August 11, 2006. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Alex G. Sanchez, who passed away on May 3, 2006, her parents, Jose De La Cruz Salaz and Maria Hinia Salaz, and her brother, Doroteo Salaz. Sally is survived by her children, Beatrice (Bea) Sanchez and husband, Bob Reis, Linda Raether and husband, Fred, Danny Sanchez and wife, Tracy Love; her beloved grandsons, Jesse Raether and Ryan Raether; sister, Vina Sanchez; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to a devoted love and commitment for her family, Sally enjoyed spending time with friends who were part of her extended family. She will be missed by all those who loved and knew her. The family wishes to extend gratitude to all members of Vista Care Hospice, especially Sandra Ault and Dorothy McMillen, for the compassionate care given to Sally. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations in her name be made to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 for donation instructions. A viewing and visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 6:00 p.m., at Romero Funeral Home. A final visitation will take place at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 16, at 8:30 a.m. with the Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. CRIDER -- Barry Melvin Crider, 68, of Torreon, NM passed away on August 9, 2006 in Torreon, NM. Barry was born on March 5, 1938 in Ewing, NM to Clint and Josie Crider. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Brandi Crider; sister in law, Linda Crider He is survived by his beloved wife, Lydia A. Crider; his daughter, Lydia A. and husband David Merck, his son Brian M. and wife Judy Crider; grandchildren, Nicole Merck; Brian A. Crider and Tori Crider, Stepsons Dr. Daniel Vigil and wife Maria, Charlie Vigil and wife Pam, his brother, Rev. Tommy G. Crider and wife Betty; his niece DeVonna Cummins and husband Brett, and their children, Conner and Makala and nephew Darin Crider and Conner and Makala and a vast family of friends. Barry attended Ewing Grade School and Estancia High School; he was a proud Vet of the US Navy from 1955 to 1960. He made a career in drilling and blasting, constructing roads and dams in various states. He also farmed and raised cattle most of his life. Funeral Services will be on Friday, August 11, 2006 at 2:00 PM at the First Assembly of God Church in Estancia, NM. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Monday, August 14, 2006 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Michael Dominguez will be officiating. Pallbearers are Bruno Romo, Mike Pope, Bobby McMath, Chester Riley, Jack Chavez, and Bill Northsworthy. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ivan Riley, Fidel Chavez Jr., and Newton Northsworthy. GARCIA -- Mariano T. Garcia, 59, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on August 11, 2006. Mariano is the beloved husband to Annie O. Garcia married for 35 years. Mariano is also survived by his loving daughters, Annette Lee Chavez and husband, Andrew, Arlinda Thompson and husband, George and Mariana Garcia; by his beloved mother, Victoria Garcia; one sister, Manuela Perales and husband, Manuel; one brother, Andres Garcia and wife, Ramona; seven grandchildren, Reynaldo, Justin, Patrick, Ariel, Vannassa, Mariana-Rae and Soledad; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mariano was preceded in death by his father, Mariano R. Garcia, a sister, Maria Natoli and a grandson, Jordan Mariano Thompson. Mariano was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam Era, a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the VFW, the D. A. V. , American Legion and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years. Visitation for Mariano will be Monday evening in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Eulogy to be held at 7:00 p.m. Final visitation will be Tuesday afternoon in the Mt. Calvary Chapel, 1900 Edith NE from 2:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. with a Funeral Service to be held at 2:30 p.m. by Pastor James Johnson. Interment will follow the Funeral Service with Military Honors by the U.S. Army. Pallbearers will be Ivran Hicks, Mike Archuleta, Sr., George Vasquez, Jessie Montoya, Henry Hernandez and Reyes Chavez. PALACIOS -- Maria Palacios, 49, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2006. She was the daughter of Luis F. and Refugio Hernandez Palacios. Maria's siblings were Manuel Palacios of Albuquerque, Lucia Palacios of Las Cruces, Pedro Palacios of Las Cruces, Reyna Palacios of Phoenix, and Daniel Palacios of Las Cruces. She is survived by her husband, Garry Hallford; and her three golden retrievers, Chewy, Allie, and Puter. Maria obtained degrees in Sociology, Spanish, and Counseling, as well as a Doctorate in Philosophy. She worked in a wide variety of fields, all of which involved serving and helping other people. Maria loved good movies, good books, and spending time with her husband and their dogs. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2006, 9:00 a.m., at Mesilla Catholic Church in Mesilla, New Mexico. Memorial Services in Albuquerque will be held on Monday, August 21, 2006, 6:00 p.m., at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel on the University of New Mexico Campus. When once asked how she would most like to be remembered, Maria said, "as a person who left situations, places, people, things, better than she found them. CONTRERAS -- Bonifacio Contreras passed away suddenly at his home on July 31, 2006. He was born on May 14, 1943 in Belen, NM to Maximiliano and Rosa Contreras and grew up in Albuquerque's south valley, graduating from Rio Grande High School in 1962. Bon was a natural athlete participating as a star Quarterback during High School and winning a Baseball scholarship to UNM. Bon attended both UNM and Arizona State University and graduated with degrees in Linguistics and related fields. After serving in the US Army from which he was honorably discharged, he continued his studies, living abroad for five more years and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. He traveled extensively Europe, specifically in Macedonia, Yugoslavia and Mexico. It has been said of Bon that he made friends easily. He was an enormously giving and charismatic man. His circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances was enormous and varied. He could strike up a conversation with a stranger at a coffee shop or address a large class, both equally captivated by his enthusiasm and passion. Bonifacio returned to the United States and followed his passion for education and languages. He was an internationally respected educator, author and publisher. He was founder and president of Educational News Service. He wrote and co-wrote many articles, books and instructional texts, most recently the Salud series specializing in Spanish/English education for those in the fields of education and public health. Bon's dear parents preceded him in death; his sister, Carmen Garcia and her husband, Paul; his brother, Maximiliano Contreras II and wife, Anne; his brother, Robert Contreras and wife, Ruth, all of New Mexico, survive him. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces, and nephews, including his namesake, Bonnie Sophia Rea and husband, Dodge of Nashville, Rose Marie, Juan, Donna, and Ronald, Maria, Pablo, and Vivien, Ben and wife, Jill, John, Maximiliano III, and Rosa, all of New Mexico. Private Services were held in Contreras, NM where Bonifacio was remembered with much love, admiration, and sorrow at his passing.
