FORD -- Anna Mae Ford (Kral) was born on June 21, 1920 in Onaga, Kansas to Florence and Anton Kral. As a child in Onaga, Anna Mae was an integral part of the family farm, tending to the crops, pigs, cattle and chickens. Her family's hard work and dedication to the farm sustained them through the Depression era, and their generosity with their produce, meat and grains assisted many Onaga citizens who were not so fortunate at the time. Selfless caring was a common theme throughout Anna Mae's life. Anna Mae graduated from Onaga High School in 1938, and then set out to seek her true calling in life: nursing. Anna Mae enrolled in St. Mary's Nursing School in Topeka, Kansas, eventually graduating with highest honors. She enlisted in the United States Army in 1943, and was shipped overseas to assist "the boys" fighting in the European Theater. While living in a makeshift tent-city outside of Paris, she witnessed the liberation of Paris and followed her nursing colleagues into the grateful city to set up and assist in a hospital for the wounded American soldiers. It was during this time she met First Lieutenant Clarence Lee Robert Ford, who was recovering from shrapnel wounds. Anna Mae and Bob, as he was known, had a whirlwind romance in Paris. As Anna Mae indicates in her memoirs, "Bob asked me two questions: can you cook, and what is your religion?" Having answered both questions to his satisfaction, the two were married in Liege, Belgium on August 6, 1945. After World War II, Bob and Anna Mae settled in Arkansas City, Kansas. On August 30, 1950, their daughter, Deborah Lee Ford, was born. Bob worked for Beechcraft, and Anna Mae continued her nursing career as an operating room nurse, an occupation she enjoyed for more than 20 years. Following Debby's graduation from Arkansas City High School in 1968, the couple moved to Wichita, Kansas where they resided until 1981. After retirement in 1981, they lived in Topeka, Kansas and Durango, Colorado, where Debby and her family lived. After Bob's passing in 1991, Anna Mae lived with Debby and her husband, Gus Jaworsky, in Durango, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Albuquerque, New Mexico until her death on Sunday, May 16, 2010. Anna Mae is remembered for her love for family, faith and selfless dedication to the well being of others. Her sense of humor was remarkable, and all who knew her were and continue to be deeply affected by Anna Mae's beautiful spirit. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob and infant daughter Rebecca, and is survived by her daughter, Debby Jaworsky and son-in-law Gus Jaworsky of Albuquerque; grandsons Todd and Eric Jaworsky of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; granddaughter Jennifer Jaworsky of Tulsa; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends who loved and will miss her. Graveside Service will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas, KS on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Donations can be made in Anna Maes name to Roadrunner Food Bank of Albuquerque, NM 87109.
