Martinez -- Mr. Pilar Martinez Jr., 64, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family on May 7, 2000. Mr. Martinez was the beloved husband of 39 years to Mrs. Betty Martinez. He is also survived by three daughters, Louise Romero and husband, David, Yvette Martinez and Diane Martinez; one son, Gerald Anthony Martinez and wife, Rose; one sister, Fita Sanchez and husband, Eddie; two brothers, Phil Martinez and wife, Priscilla and Eppie Martinez; four grandchildren, Felicia, Savannah, Amanda and Bernadette; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Martinez was a veteran of the U.S. Army. A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning, 9:00 a.m., at Victory Love Fellowship Church, 7201 Central NW, with visitation at the church after 8:30 a.m. Pastor Jack Connor officiating. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:00 p.m. with Military Honors. Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW, in charge of the arrangements.

Matlack -- George Miller Matlack, a Los Alamos resident for 51 years, died on Sunday, May 7, 2000. He was born June 14, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Penn., a twin son of Mildred Miller and Allyn Wolcott Matlack. He attended schools in Steubenville, Ohio, until 1935, when he and his brother, David, moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they attended and graduated from East High School in 1939. George graduated from Grinnell College in 1943 with an A.B. degree, then earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the State University of Iowa in 1949. While at Grinnell he met Meredith Madsen; they married in 1943 and had four children. He joined the Iowa Geological Survey as principal chemist in 1943, and worked there until he entered graduate school in 1946. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1949, he joined the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's Analytical Chemistry Group, where he remained until his retirement in 1990. He continued to work with that group as Senior Advisor until 1994. During his career at the laboratory, his contributions were focused on the measurement of actinide elements including plutonium, americium, uranium and other heavy radioactive elements. A recognized authority on plutonium, he served as leader of a project to measure plutonium-238 in heat sources for use in artificial hearts. He also participated in the design and testing of a device to measure the uranium content of large quantities of fuel elements, which he presented at a symposium sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. In recent years, he served as advisor for an archeological dig, working on detecting fossilized dinosaur bones by measuring their natural uranium content. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professional memberships included the American Chemical Society, American Nuclear Society, New York Academy of Sciences and Iowa Academy of Sciences. A longtime member of the United Church, George joined Trinity-on-the- Hill Episcopal Church in 1998. He was a Master Mason at Pajarito Lodge #66 AF&AM, and a member of Chapter #63, Order of Eastern Star. George took great pleasure in hiking, photography, fly fishing, fly tying, and all kinds of music. He was a member of The Four Fifths folk music group, Los Alamos Choral Society and Los Alamos Sinfonietta. His resonant baritone voice graced the United Church choir for many years. He also participated in Los Alamos Light Opera and the Don Juan Playhouse Group. A widely respected curmudgeon, he was known for his gentle ways of helping resolve difficult situations among people. Preceded in death by his youngest son, Allyn, he is survived by his beloved wife, Meredith; children, Nancy Williams of Logan, Utah, Christine Ward, Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Martin, Cedar Crest, New Mexico; his brother, David Wolcott Matlack of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Elisabeth, Johannah, Patrick, Anna, Jeremy and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, Luke, Ruth, Ian, Kade and William Allyn. A Memorial service will be held at Trinity-on-the-Hill Episcopal Church on Friday, May 12th, at 11:00 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service Inc., 116 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

Sandoval -- Mrs. Esther Sandoval died Saturday in Albuquerque at the age of 72. Mrs. Sandoval was preceded in death by her sister, Margarita Jaramillo. She is survived by her son, David Sandoval and wife, Maria; daughters, Mary Armijo and Jennie Charrette; brother, Joe J. Jaramillo; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mrs. Sandoval will be held on Wednesday at the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Sandoval, Joe Jaramillo, Santino Armijo, Juan Gonzales, David Gallegos, David Leyva, David Cabrera and Orlando Gomez. Haar -- Eric Haar passed away unexpectedly May 3, 2000 at the age of 21. He is survived by his parents, Patrick and Debra of Albuquerque; brother, Jon and his wife, Heather of South Korea; sister, Allison of Albuquerque; grandparents, Leo and Eleanor Haar of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Rodney and Delores Peterson of Bismarck, ND; five uncles, Michael Haar and wife, Pam of Silver Lake, KS, Brad Haar and wife, Shirley of Madison, SD, John Haar of Chicago, Brian Peterson and wife, Judy of Bismarck, ND and Bruce Peterson and wife, Tammy of Chandler, AZ; and many cousins and good friends, Lauren and Kristen Frost, Sean Mackey, Stuart Lamb, John Coyle and many others. Eric attended schools in Minnesota and New Mexico before graduating from La Cueva High School in May, 1997. After graduation he worked at a variety of jobs and attended college in South Dakota for a year. Eric was an avid soccer and hockey player and he had a passion for model trains. He left behind a great number of people whom he helped in various ways. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6901 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Pastor Aaron Couch officiating. Pallbearers will be Stuart Lamb, John Coyle, David Hendrickson, Sean Mackay, Sage Moore and Brian Peterson. Martinez -- Luther Frank Martinez Sr., 84, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1933, died Saturday, May 6, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cordelia Lily S. Martinez of the family home; sons, Luther F. Martinez Jr. and wife, Alice of Albuquerque, Lavern E. Martinez and wife, Francie of Denver, CO, LeRoy D. Martinez and wife, Ines of Mission Viejo, CA and Lemuel L. Martinez of Bernalillo; daughter, Linda G. Alvarado and husband, Robert of Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, David S. Martinez and wife, Virginia of Independence, MO; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence L. Martinez. Mr. Martinez was employed by Sandia National Laboratories for 25 years and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, auto mechanics, remodeling, and was a fan of the Colorado Rockies and the New Mexico Lobos. He was a WWII Army Veteran of the South Pacific, earning a Purple Heart. He was a Member/Deacon of Hoffmantown Baptist Church, East Mesa Civitans, and VFW Post #401. Services are pending. Maldonado -- Mrs. Florinda Maldonado, 88, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on May 5, 2000. Mrs. Maldonado is survived by three daughters, Mela Gutierrez and husband, Robert, Erlinda Gabaldon and husband, Gilbert and Angela Sanchez and husband, Henry; four sons, George McAfee and wife, Stella, Joe McAfee and wife, Annie of Whitier, CA, Leroy McAfee and wife, Isabel of Chandler, AZ and Frank McAfee and wife, Gloria of Chilili, NM; three sisters, Perfy Marquez and husband, Tony, Trinidad Gallegos and Lilly Keylon and husband, Jack; one brother, Daniel Gutierrez and wife, Oralia; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Moya was preceded in death by her husband, Cresencio; and her sister, Candida Romero. Mrs. Moya was a member of the Catholic Church. Cavasos -- Ervan Clayton Cavasos, 91, a resident of Moriarty, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000. He was born to James and Anna Mahala Cavasos, November 2, 1908 in Leedy, Oklahoma. They moved to New Mexico when he was 12 years old, he and his mother had become sick with T.B. He married Eunice Martin, July 5, 1928 in Estancia, NM and moved to Moriarty in 1937 with their beautiful children, Naomi, Marvin, Carl, Alvin Ray, Alda Mae and Howard. In 1945, two more beautiful daughters were added to the family, Nita and Rita. He is survived by his children; brother, Donald; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice; and youngest son, Howard. Ervan and his family lived through some hard times, but his faith and loved in the Lord helped carry them through. He taught Sunday School for many years and preached on occasion. He felt that God had called him to tell others about Christ and so the Lord used his business as a mission field. He raised all his children to know the Lord and he was known to say,"That was his greatest accomplishment." Ervan was known throughout the county for his excellence in welding his honesty, and hard working attitude, he was a wonderful dad, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle; he will be missed by those who loved and knew him. Ervan will lie in state Friday, May 5, 2000, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Harris-Hanlon Chapel in Moriarty. Services will be Saturday, May 6, 2000, 1:30 p.m., at the Stanley Union Church in Stanley, NM, with James Thompson, officiating. Burial will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery in Moriarty. Pallbearers will be Jay Kirlin, David Cavasos, Ernie Cavasos, Bobby Taylor, Damon Taylor, and Chris Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Cavasos, Mike Cavasos, Joe Cavasos, Woodrow Love, Saul, Gene Cavasos, Steven Yoder, Weldon Sewell, Boyd Corfield and Beryl D. Martin. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty.
