BELSER -- John P. Belser, 43, of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, after a 3-year battle with leukemia. He is survived by his mother, Mary Belser; financee, Donna DeHaan; son, Tyler; sister, Joanne; brother, James; and nephew, James, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Belser; and Donna's grandmother. John was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to Grand Forks, ND as a child. He moved to Albuquerque in 1979. John owned and operated Belser's Tae Kwon Do. He was a 3rd Degree Black Belt and teaching children was his passion. John enjoyed fishing and he loved to travel. SHEBLER -- Ruth M. Shebler, 80, a longtime resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2004. Ruth was born June 12, 1924, the daughter of Emil and Catherine Lendzian, in Staten Island, NY. She had been a Daycare worker with the Amiquitos Daycare before she retired. Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho. She loved reading, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in December 2002 and one grandson, George Shea. She is survived by three children, Janice Sciarrillo and husband, Tony of Albuquerque, James Shebler and wife, Debbie of Rio Rancho, and Judy Valencia and husband, Ambrose of Portland, OR; two sisters, Gladyes Ford of Long Island, NY and Beverly Frank of Earlton, NY; seven grandchildren, Jessie, Mathew, Joseph, Mellissa, Lynn, Michael, and Christina; and nine great-grandchildren, Austin, Zach, James, Brandon, Anthony, Caleb, Preston, Jordyn, and Richard. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho, with Pastor Ted With officiating. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. It has been suggested that memorial contributions be made in Ruth's name to the First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho Building Fund, 3906 19th Ave., Rio Rancho, NM 87124. SPIRUP -- James George Spirup of Sequim, Washington, passed away at home on Saturday, July 24, 2004. The oldest son of Peter Michael Spirup and Lona Marie Rasmussen Spirup, he was born at St. Paul, Oregon, on July 9, 1922. He received his early education at St. Paul, OR, graduating from high school in 1938. He graduated from Pacific College of Newberg, OR in 1942 with a Bachelor's Degree in History. He pursued graduate study in History at the University of California in Berkeley. He was employed by Sandia Laboratories of Livermore, CA and later Albuquerque, NM for thirty-five years. Upon his retirement from Albuquerque in 1992, he and his wife moved to Sequim, WA. On June 22, 1945, he married his college sweetheart, Betty Ann Craven. They were married for fifty-nine years. Their children include Patricia Carol Terry of Marysville, WA, JoAnn Luckemeyer of Reno, NV, Virginia Charline Leoppard of Truckee, CA and James Michael Spirup of Abingdon, VA. Proud of his Danish heritage, Mr. Spirup's grandparents immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. His grandfather, Peter Rasmussen, graduated from seminary in Iowa. Reverend Rasmussen pastored churches in Iowa, California and Portland, OR, where he eventually retired. Mr. Spirup was born at their home in St. Paul, OR. A veteran of World War II, he faithfully served his country as a Naval pilot in Germany. A sincere love of the Lord Jesus Christ pervaded his life. He was active in Bible Study Fellowship International, serving as a discussion leader for several years. He was the Christian Education Elder at the Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, where his family worshipped during their years in CA. He was active in Gideons International, working through the local organization. A faithful member of Sequim Presbyterian Church, he lead small discussion groups though the Alpha Program. He was also a leader of the Small Groups Ministry. Mr. Spirup is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Patricia, JoAnn and Virginia; and his son, Jim. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Eric Metz, Jennifer Harrington, Megan Oelhert, Joel Luckenmeyer and Helen Spirup, Caitie Jo Terry, Raven Elizabeth Avery; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua, and Hanna Harrington. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Spirup, of Salem, OR. A Memorial service will be held at Sequim Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. Friends are welcome to say good bye to Jim at Drenan and Ford Funeral Home of Port Angeles on Thursday, July 29, 2004 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. All memorial contributions in Jim's name should be made to Gideons International. BARSANTI -- Longtime Albuquerque resident, Henry Barsanti, passed away quietly in his sleep Thursday evening, July 22nd, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, following a brief illness. Henry was born January 24, 1911, in Tamarack, MI to Achille and Asunta Barsanti. In 1913 his family went to visit relatives in Lucca, Italy and due to the breakout of World War I, were forced to remain in Italy. He returned to the United States in 1927 unable to speak English. He served his country during World War II as a foreman in the shipyards in CA. Mr. Barsanti began his tailor apprenticeship in Italy at the age of eight, and brought his skills as a master tailor to the US, spending a number of years with Stromberg's, and later cofounding Henry's Fine Men's Wear from the late 1950s until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Barsanti derived great pleasure from being active in his church and various charitable organizations. He was one of the founding chairmen of The Storehouse, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Goodwill, YMCA, and Traveler's Aid. He was also a President of the Downtown Albuquerque Kiwanis Club, and an Elder at First Presbyterian Church. In 1935 Henry married Mary Alma (Pat) Nixon, who passed away in 1999. He is survived by his brother, Paolo Barsanti of Lucca, Italy; two sons, Tom (Debra) Barsanti of Chicago; Ron Barsanti of Pagosa Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Lisa (James) Campanis of Phillips Ranch, CA; Kelley Barsanti of Portland, OR; Cameron Barsanti of Los Angeles; Matt Barsanti of Chicago; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Tommy Campanis of Phillips Ranch, CA. In Italy, niece Doriana (Renzo) Lombardi. In New Mexico, nieces Emma Menicucci, Jan Henfling, Margaret Mann, Mary (Bob) Montgomery, and nephew Bob (Judy) Fleming. Services will be Thursday, July 29, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. LOEMKER -- Lois A. Loemker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on July 23, 2004. She was born on July 26, 1932 in Norborne, Missouri to Rudolph and Louise Schifferdecker. Lois came to New Mexico with her husband in 1956 and had lived in Corrales since 1972. She graduated Kappa Delta Phi with a degree in Elementary Education from Central Missouri State University. Lois was very involved in and a devout member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. She enjoyed spending her time in the garden, canning, and baking delicious treats for her family. Lois was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Gerald and Arnold Schifferdecker. She is survived by her cherished husband, Herbert; her loving children, Vickie (John) Zubiade, Randall (Carol) Loemker, Rhonda (Scott) Jones, Grant (Karen) Loemker; brothers, Charles and James; sister, Marguerite (Ruthie); and her precious grandchildren, John Michael, David (Robie), Amanda, Leah, Lucas, Rebecca, Jonathan; and a host of loving friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Sunrise Funeral Options, 2400 Southern Blvd. in Rio Rancho. AVILA -- Andrew James (Jim) Avila died of heart failure on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the age of 45. A well-known rock musician, Jim played a mesmerizing lead guitar and sang a powerful, sweet lead in numerous local bands, most recently Trauma Unit. He organized musical benefits for the "Make A Wish" foundation and composed many songs. His talent and generosity were saluted on the radio station 94 Rock in an all-day tribute on July 22. Jim graduated from Sandia High School, Class of '76, and earned his associate degree in electronics from T-VI. He went on to become an electrical engineer. He worked at Siemen's in Albuquerque and later founded Modular Solutions, Inc. a company that designs robotic lighting. His line of lighting is manufactured in Florida, and both Universal Studios and Epcot Center use his lights. He also worked on various private and governmental robotic projects. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy Schiess Avila; by his daughter, Krystal Avila; his mother, Adelina Sanchez Avila; his sister, Luisa Ramirez; his brother, David Avila; nephews Gerald Parras, Jeffrey Avila and Christopher Avila; nieces Char Parras Schneringer and Kyndra Parras Vigil; his dogs, Blue and Red; and countless friends. A mass will be held on Tuesday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE. GORDON -- Brandon Joseph Gordon, 26, born December 8, 1977 in Morgan City, LA to Bob and Shari Gordon was tragically taken from us on Saturday, July 24, 2004 in Denver, CO. BAREFOOT -- Dr. Curtis Anthony "Tony" Barefoot, 53, a resident of Albuquerque since 1976, died Friday, July 23, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Olga T. Barefoot of Albuquerque; son, Ivan and wife, Gisela of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Isaac and Maximiliano; sister, Valarie Peterson of Orangevale, CA; nephew, Frank Peterson; niece, Veronique Peterson; aunts, Sylvia Whyte, and Mae Manning; uncle, Osbourne James; cousins, Alanna Capps, Shawn Redding, Annette Taylor, Sheila Mogliazzi, Sabrina Owens, Tselane Dean, Rashima McKelvin, and Andrew Redding; Aunt Rosa, Jennie, and Curly Lucas of Baltimore; close friend, Ramon Acosta; and numerous other family and friends. Tony was born in Baltimore, MD and graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1968. He graduated with a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Tony also graduated from John Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. He received his PhD in Math from UNM in 1980. After receiving his PhD, he went to work for Sandia National Labs before taking a professorship at UNM. Tony then went to University of Colorado Denver and then taught at New Mexico Tech in Socorro for 18 years. Math was his first love and passion. He loved to play classical guitar. He was very kind, loving, and caring. He was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
