Mullins -- Ross Mullins, 75, a New Mexico resident since 1953, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 1998 in his home in Albuquerque. Ross was born on January 15, 1923 in Wood, VA. He was a member of the Company B 343 Infantry of the United States Army from January 1943 to June 1946, where he served as Private First Class. Company B 343 served with the"Blackhawk" Infantry Division of the German-Austrian border when World War II ended in Europe May 8, 1945 V.E. Day Ross then graduated with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Iowa in 1948. He worked as an electrical engineer for the Public Service Company of New Mexico from June 1953 to June 1984. During that time, he served as Field Engineer from 1953-55; Division Manager in Deming from 1960-68; returning to Albuquerque in 1968 as Vice President until retirement in 1984. During his life, Ross was a member of various civic and social organizations, including Masonic Lodge, president of the Deming Chamber of Commerce, president of the Chaparral Girl Scout Council in Deming, Rotary International, and Central United Methodist Church. His hobbies included golfing, gardening, picture framing, and trading on the stock market. Ross married the former Maribel Pratt of Cedar Rapids, IA on December 19, 1947. Ross and Maribel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family last December in Albuquerque. Ross is survived by his loving wife, Maribel; two daughters, Janet Mullins and husband, Pat Matzner of Phoenix, AZ and Patti Gallegly and husband, Tim of El Paso, TX; his son, Mike Mullins of Midland, TX; his grandchildren, Mike Gaskin and wife, Ann, Cris Gaskin and wife, Kim and Mary and Katie Gallegly, and Stephanie Mullins; sisters, Annis Dale and husband, Charles of Virginia, Grace Allio of Virginia, Zelma Pattillo and husband, Wesley Pat of Alabama and Edith Beverly and husband, Calvin of Ohio; and brothers, Hampton Mullins and wife, Billie of Ohio and Edgar Mullins and wife, Jeanne of Virginia and Charles Mullins and wife, Susie of Ohio. Ross was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed a good game of golf, a strong conversation, a good box of ice cream, a well manicured lawn and garden, and most of all going out of his way to help his family and friends in any and every way possible. Ross always made sure that each family member had enough coffee, toilet paper, and film to last until his next visit. We love you Papaw and will always keep you close to our hearts! Memorial services will be held Saturday, 3:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper Ave NE, with Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Nassif -- Anne Jeanette Nassif, age 85, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 5, 1998. She was born in Portland, Michigan on February 19, 1913 to Peter and Lillian Meyers. She is survived by her brother, Gerald Meyers; niece, Patricia Meyers; nephew, Raymond Meyers, all of Michigan; granddaughters, Sheryl Nanco of Albuquerque, Marie Turpin of Billings, MT; grandsons, Dan Geiger of Eugene, OR and Dave Geiger of Albuquerque; and four great-grandchildren. A Rosary was recited Tuesday, September 8, 1998 with Monsignor Fred Stadtmueller reciting. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, September 9, 1998 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Chapel with Monsignor Fred Stadtmueller as Celebrant. Interment followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Peralta -- Simon E. Peralta, 60, of Las Cruces, died Tuesday, September 18, 1998 at home. He was born on November 18, 1937 in Taos, NM. Simon had been a Las Cruces resident for the past 12 years, moving from Taos to Las Cruces after his retirement. He is survived by his sons, Simon L. Peralta and wife, Linda of Albuquerque, Dennis Peralta and wife, Matilda of Santa Fe; daughters, Francella Martinez of Bernalillo, Loretta Martinez, widow of Fernando Martinez of Santa FE, Ana Marie Peralta of Las Cruces; mother, Benita G. Peralta of Taos; brother, Orlando (Datto) Peralta of Espanola; niece, Daniella Peralta of Albuquerque; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and by many other relatives and friends. Simon was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marcia V. Peralta. A Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 1998 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Taos, NM with Interment of cremains to follow at the Pilar Cemetery. Smith -- Candace Carstens Smith, 100, an Albuquerque resident for 60 years, died Sunday, September 6, 1998, at the Montebello Retirement Community. Wife of the late Dane F. Smith, Professor of English, for whom the new classroom building at the University of New Mexico is named, she was the daughter of the founder of the Child Welfare League of America and the mother of both the current United States Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal and a teacher in APS. Born in Marshalltown, IA, during the year of the Spanish American War, Mrs. Smith attended Grinell College, graduated from Smith College in 1921, and , after working as a secretary and teacher, earned a Ph.D., in history in 1937 from Radcliffe College, now part of Harvard University. That year she married Professor Dane Smith and moved into the home they had built in"faculty row" on Roma Avenue, where she remained after her husband's death in 1968 until the residence was torn down in 1996 to make way for the new classroom building. She assisted Professor Smith in his research and writing and was largely responsible for the posthumous publication of his last book, Plays about the Theaters, Volume II. Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of the Tuesday Literary Club. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Candace Mize of Albuquerque; a son, Ambassador Dane F. Smith, Jr.; and four grandchildren. Stelter -- Jean Stelter, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1984, died Tuesday, September 8, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Rouse and husband, William; and grandchildren, William Rouse Jr., Matthew Rouse, Robin Hutchens and husband, Eric. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Stelter. Entombment will be in Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ. Swensen -- Raymond W. Swensen, 74, a native of Albuquerque, died Thursday, September 10, 1998, after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Josephine Swensen of Albuquerque; brother, Francis Swensen of Bosque Farms; sister-in-law, Dana Swensen of Albuquerque; niece, Barbara Myers and husband, Harold of Albuquerque; grandniece, Jennifer Yardman and her children, Stephanie and Daniel, all of Las Vegas; and grandnephew, Joel Bretz of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother, Edward; and son, David Jay. Mr. Swensen was a 1943 graduate of Albuquerque High School. He served in the US Army Air Corp, 467th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force and flew 36 missions. Mr. Swensen retired after 20 years of service with the General Electric Corporation. He was a life member of the Elks Club, Lodge #461. Mr. Swensen was also a member of I.B.E.W., Union #611, and I.A.M. Cremation has taken place and no services will be scheduled. Wagner -- Sara C. Kellogg (Nanny) Wagner, 100, died Tuesday, September 8, 1998. She is survived by her son, Robert B. Wagner and wife, Myrtle of Anchorage, AK; daughters, Wanda Mae Higgins of Albuquerque, Wilma Fae Towns and husband, Edward of Monroe, NC, and Emma Jean Cobb and husband, James of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Wagner homesteaded in Estancia Valley in 1906 and she had lived in Albuquerque, El Paso, and Jemez Springs since that time. For the past 25 years she was known and loved as"Nanny" at Hummingbird Music Camp in Jemez Springs. She was an accomplished interior decorator and a well known seamstress known for her fiesta dresses which she marketed nationally as Sara Lynn Originals. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Sunday, September 13, 1998, 4:00 p.m., at Hummingbird Music Camp's Rose Garden, Jemez Springs, NM, with Rev. Harry Chapman officiating. Benavidez -- Mr. Benjamin (Ben) Benavidez Sr., 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 7, 1998. Mr. Benavidez is survived by one daughter, Becky Benavidez and fiance, Bruce Penn; three sons, Ivan Benavidez, Rudy Benavidez and wife, Stella, and Benjamin (Ben) Benavidez Jr.; nine grandchildren, Regina Benavidez, Ivan Benavidez Jr., Cheryl Beal, Troy Benavidez, Leeann Rees, Benjamin Benavidez III, Raquel Baca, Rick Benavidez, and Lee Ross Benavidez; ten great-grandchildren, Nikohl Martinez, Brandon Martinez, Alexandria Williams, Anastasia Benavidez, Miranda Benavidez, Marcus Beal, Anthony Baca Jr., Teryn Beal, Benjamin (Justin) Benavidez III, and Ivan (Reno) Benavidez III; one sister, Moises Benavidez. Mr. Benavidez was a member of the Catholic Church, member of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, and member of the Atrisco Land Grant. A Memorial Rosary will be recited on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Catholic Church, 564 Atrisco SW. The family will be receiving friends after 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning in the Holy Family Church, Father Jack, Celebrant. Davidson -- Robert Davidson, age 82, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 6, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Mary E."Betty" Davidson; children, Robert C. Duran -- Joseph Randy, 19 (March 20, 1979) of Alameda passed away Sunday, September 6, 1998. He is survived by his parents, Ronnie and Angie Duran of Alameda; his brothers, Ronnie Duran, Jr., and his wife, Melissa of Albuquerque and Carlos Duran of Alameda; his two sons, Joseph Duran, Jr., and Tomas Duran of Alameda and his girlfriend, Carmen Sanchez. Also surviving is his niece, Alexis Duran; his grandparents, Tomas and Elisa Gonzales and Mary Duran; his aunts and uncle, Tommy Gonzales, Jr., Ramona Chavez, Rita Cordova, Eileen Tafoya and husband, Ben P. Tafoya, Rachel Gutierrez and husband, Steve; and cousins. He graduated from Del Norte High School in 1997. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Final viewing will be at 8:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary.
