Earles -- Artie Ray Earles, age 90, died on December 28th in Lakewood, CO. Artie was born August 26, 1908 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He was the son of Dennis Jefferson Earles and Laura Jane Duncan Earles. He married Iva Lee Whiddon in Holdenville, Oklahoma on July 16, 1927 and they had five children, Donald Ray Earles of Georgetown, TX, Marcie Jay Earles of Albuquerque, Betty Lee Hylton of Lakewood, CO, Samuel Dennis Earles who died in 1933, and James Arthur Earles of Eureka, CA. Iva Lee preceded Artie in death in December of 1990. In addition to four of his children, Artie is survived by 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior when he was a young man and rededicated his life to Christ in 1965. Artie was an active member of the IOOF for most of his life and held all chairs. Although his health began to fail him in his 60s, his mind remained sharp and clear until the end. We will miss him. There will be a graveside service at Sandia Memory Garden, 700 Yale Blvd., at 2:00 p.m. on December 31st.

Foster -- Elza A. Foster, 69, a resident of Albuquerque since January 1957, died Monday, December 28, 1998. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Wesley Foster of the family home; daughter, Susan Mullins and husband, Gill of Belen, NM; sons, Tom Foster and wife, Mary of Albuquerque, Rick Foster and wife, Pat of Aurora, CO, Dennis Foster and wife, Kathy of Spanish Fork, UT, and Jim Foster and wife, Lyz of Los Lunas, NM; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Julie Kuczek and husband, Ted of Brooksville, FL; and special friend, Father John Carney. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward VanWalleghem in May 1998. Mrs. Foster has been a church organist for over 40 years with the last 29 years at San Antonito Catholic Church. She loved her church and she was very active in it. One of her main enjoyments was going to Sandia Casino whether it was for lunch or playing"21". She was legally blind since 1982, but yet was able to continue playing the organ and playing blackjack. Mrs. Foster lived for her church and her family and she will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at Holy Child Catholic Church in Tijeras. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Child Catholic Church in Tijeras, with Father John Carney, Celebrant. Interment will follow at San Antonito Cemetery. Francia -- Mrs. Elusela"Lucy" Francia died Monday in Albuquerque at the age of 71. Mrs. Francia was a member of the San Jose Catholic Church and worked for Lovelace Medical Center for 21 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Luciano Francia; three grandsons; and one great-grandson. Mrs. Francia is survived by her mother, Elicia Paz; sons, Leroy Francia and fiancee, Tina, and Larry Francia and wife, Betty, all of Albuquerque; daughters, Ernestina Zamora and companion, Tomas Torres, Virginia Francia and husband, Tony, all of Peralta, NM, Lorraine Saavedra and husband, Mike of Albuquerque, Clorinda Vargas and husband, Santiago, of Peralta, Carmen Green and husband, Tommy of Alb, Julie Vigil and husband, Pete Jr. of Peralta, and Lucille Martin and husband, Ronnie; special nephew, Delfin Paz and wife, Yolanda; brother, Nazareno Paz and wife, Wilma; sisters, Agnes Chavez, Priscilla Perez, Rosemary Sanchez and husband, Tommy, and Mickey Maldonado, all of Albuquerque; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mrs. Francia will be held on Thursday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Gilbert -- Viola M. Gilbert, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1944, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998. She is survived by her brothers, Jim Gilbert and wife, Rose and Ronald Gilbert, all of Albuquerque; aunt, Isabell Castillo of Raton, NM; five nephews and nieces, Ronald A. Gilbert and wife, Kary, James A. Gilbert, Jr. and wife, Elubia, Jeanne Schweiger and husband, Tim, Michelle Stanfill and husband, Mike and Vincent J. Gilbert and wife, Gina; 11 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vivian and Cruzita Gilbert. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. Viola was a registered nurse, having graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in El Paso, TX. Gonzales -- Robert Y. Gonzales, 76, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Friday, December 25, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Roberta Gonzales-Abeita and husband, Edward of Albuquerque; sons, Paul Gonzales, John Gonzales and wife, Margaret Ann all of Albuquerque, and Anthony Gonzales of Alaska; 11 grandchildren, Robert Mirabal, Paul Mirabal, Cheryl and Sharon Gonzales, Tanya and Tina Gonzales, John D. Gonzales, Dean E. Gonzales, Denise D. Padilla, Darlene Garcia, and Jason Gonzales; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters; three brothers; and best friend, Jim Hardwood. Mr. Gonzales was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy L. Gonzales, September 18, 1988. He proudly served in the 148th Infantry during WWII in the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater, and Phillipine Liberation. He received the Good Conduct and Victory Medals. Mr. Gonzales was a member of DAV, American Legion, Post #49 and he was a member of Santuario De San Martin of which he and his wife, Lucy L. helped found. Hicks -- Jimmie Roger Hicks, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, December 27, 1998 in a local hospital following an illness. He is survived by his mother, Lola Hicks; six brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 30, 1998 at Fitzgerald's Mortuary with burial at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.

Hume -- William Hume II, of Socorro, died Monday in Albuquerque after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Oxford, Mississippi. He moved to Albuquerque in 1935 to join the faculty of the University of New Mexico. He moved to Socorro in 1949, where he served on the faculty of New Mexico Tech as professor of physics, dean of the college and assistant to the president until his retirement in 1975. He was preceded in death by his wife Anafred Stephenson Hume, who died in 1969, and grandson Robert Branham Hume, the son of Robert B. and Kathleen Hume. He is survived by his sister Mary Hume Kelton, daughter Ann Hume Taulbee and her children Lisa Kay Taulbee, Carol Lynn Taulbee and husband Bart Stucky and Karen Taulbee Flores and husband Mikel; son William C. Hume and wife Elizabeth G., and their children William A. Hume and Elizabeth A. Hume; son Robert B. Hume and wife Kathleen, their son Phillip Bainard Hume; daughter Jane Hume Anderson and her children William Theodore Anderson and Amy Kay Anderson; daughter Mary Hume Melia and sons John M. Melia and Matthew M. Melia. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert B. Stephenson and wife Mary Ann, and their children William Craig Stephenson and Ann Stephenson Cortes and husband Rodolfo and their daughter Daisy. Private memorial services are being planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, New Mexico Tech, or the charity of your choice.

Lawhorn -- George F. (Fred) Lawhorn, 82, an Albuquerque resident since 1945, died Monday, December 28, 1998. Mr. Lawhorn was a retired USAF Chief Warrant Officer, W-4, with 29 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII where he was a survivor of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines and was also a POW from April 1942 until September 1945. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous other awards and decorations. He was also a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He was a life member of DAV. Mr. Lawhorn was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was active with their Monday Feeding Program. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Lawhorn of the family home; sons, Fred B. Lawhorn and wife, Judy of Yuba City, CA, Col. Paul K. Lawhorn, USAF and wife, Linda of San Antonio, TX, John D. Lawhorn and wife, Martha of Chatham, NJ; grandchildren, Laura Bruck and husband, Thadd of Anchorage, AK, A/1C David Lawhorn of Fairchild, AFB, WA, Sean Lawhorn and wife, Joya of Albuquerque, Dawn Lawhorn of San Antonio, TX, Thomas Lawhorn of Mascoutah, IL, Shannon Lawhorn and Alex Lawhorn, both of Chatham, NJ; step-grandchildren, Becky Ray of Chico, CA and Alicia Swan and husband, Mike of Mt. Lizut -- Margaret G. Lizut, 51, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away December 26, 1998 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Lizut is survived by her loving children, three daughters, Laurie Lizut, Jennifer Lizut and Kathy Foster and husband, Adam; and her adoring sister, Mildred Grossman. Mrs. Lizut was a beloved mother who deeply loved her children. She bravely faced her illness and left peacefully when the Lord called her Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 29, 1998, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Funeral Home. Matteucci -- Margaret Balduini Matteucci, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 1998 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Matteucci, her parents, Raffaello and Giulia Catelani Balduini and two brothers, Charlie and Louie Balduini.
