Earles -- Artie Ray Earles, age 90, died on December 28th in Lakewood, CO. Artie was born August 26, 1908 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He was the son of Dennis Jefferson Earles and Laura Jane Duncan Earles. He married Iva Lee Whiddon in Holdenville, Oklahoma on July 16, 1927 and they had five children, Donald Ray Earles of Georgetown, TX, Marcie Jay Earles of Albuquerque, Betty Lee Earles Hylton of Lakewood, CO, Samuel Dennis Earles who died in 1933, and James Arthur Earles of Eureka, CA. Iva Lee preceded Artie in death in December of 1990. In addition to four of his children, Artie is survived by 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior when he was a young man and rededicated his life to Christ in 1965. Artie was an active member of the IOOF for most of his life and held all chairs. Although his health began to fail him in his 60s, his mind remained sharp and clear until the end. We will miss him. On December 31st visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal SE, and at 2:00 p.m. there will be a graveside service at Sandia Memory Garden. Evnetzky -- Sol Evnetzky is finally at peace, Monday, December 28, 1998. He is survived by his daughters, Gayle Waxman and her husband, Martin, Bonnie Evnetzky-Horne and her husband, David and their two children. Sol was a highly decorated medic during WWII and was one of the first at the D-Day Landing at Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Leah and Toby; his mother, Sara and father, Samuel. Graveside service will be Thursday, December 31, 1998, 12:00 p.m., at Fairview Memorial Park."Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Hume -- William Hume II, of Socorro, died Monday in Albuquerque after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Oxford, Mississippi. He moved to Albuquerque in 1935 to join the faculty of the University of New Mexico. He moved to Socorro in 1949, where he served on the faculty of New Mexico Tech as professor of physics, dean of the college and assistant to the president until his retirement in 1975. He was preceded in death by his wife Anafred Stephenson Hume, who died in 1969, and grandson Robert Branham Hume, the son of Robert B. and Kathleen Hume. He is survived by his sister Mary Hume Kelton, daughter Ann Hume Taulbee and her children Lisa Kay Taulbee, Carol Lynn Taulbee and husband Bart Stucky and Karen Taulbee Flores and husband Mikel; son William C. Hume and wife Elizabeth G., and their children William A. Hume and Elizabeth A. Hume; son Robert B. Hume and wife Kathleen, their son Phillip Bainard Hume; daughter Jane Hume Anderson and her children William Theodore Anderson and Amy Kay Anderson; daughter Mary Hume Melia and sons John M. Melia and Matthew M. Melia. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert B. Stephenson and wife Mary Ann, and their children William Craig Stephenson and Ann Stephenson Cortes and husband Rodolfo and their daughter Daisy. Private memorial services are being planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, New Mexico Tech, or the charity of your choice.

Marantz -- Laura"Zoe" Marantz, 75, a resident of Albuquerque for eight years, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 1998 after a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Ray Marantz of the family home; her daughter, Lee A. Taylor, El Paso, TX; grandson, Ro Williams, Phoenix, AZ; and granddaughter, Camille Taylor, El Paso, TX; two sisters, Eunice Foreschler and husband, Bill of Albuquerque and Lou Hickerson, El Paso, TX; and her brother, George R. Perkins, Las Vegas, NV. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Central United Methodist Church. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal SE, in charge of arrangements.

Martinez -- Alfonso A. Martinez passed away the 28th of December at Towner House under the loving care of Mae Ocana. Mr. Martinez had been ill for quite a few years. Mr. Martinez was born in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, then moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he was well-known. Mr. Martinez was a Civil Engineer and worked for the Highway Department for 36 years where he worked as Bridge and Highway Engineer. In 1981, he moved to Albuquerque. Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, Vickie of the home; one grandson, Alexis Nicolas Martinez. Mr. Martinez was preceded by his only son, Wilfred A. Martinez, who passed away the 15th day of August of this year. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Rafael, Severino, Rudolfo and Eloy Martinez; one sister, Priscilla Cruz; surviving brothers, Napoleon Martinez and wife, Isabel, Christobal Martinez and wife, Evangeline of Santa Cruz, NM, Pascual Martinez and wife, Stella; four sisters, Pita Block of Santa Fe, Cleofas Lujan and husband, Nick, Marcella Calloway of Virginia, Letisha Shelton of Kansas City, MO. Also surviving loved ones are his two step-children, Josephine O. Short and husband, Ernie; step-son, Mark Lee Bailey and wife, Grace of Roswell; one beloved granddaughter, Loretta Mares; and two daughters, Tina Marie and Leona Mares; several step-grandchildren and granddaughters. We also wish to mention Ben and Mary Martinez for their love, attention and for being there for us at all times and for their help. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church on Lomas and Tennessee. The cremains will then be taken to Sunset Cemetery where his cremains will be place to rest.

Smith -- Lois B. Smith, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998. She is survived by her sons, Robert Don Smith and wife, Barbara of Greenville, NC and Daniel Polk Smith and wife, Barbara of Tuscon, AZ; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on June 3, 1988, after 59 years of happily married life. Mrs. Smith was born October 15, 1908 to Mikiel E. Beaver and Samintha Pearson Beaver in Erath Co., TX. When she was four years old, her parents moved to Kent Co., TX in a covered wagon where she grew up and finished high school. Mrs. Smith was baptized into Christ in 1922 at the age of 14 and remained a member of the Church of Christ until her death. She married John Smith on May 24, 1929 at Girard, TX. Mrs. Smith taught school in Texas for 9 years. She then moved to Albuquerque and worked for the U.S. Government for 16 years, one year with the Department of Agriculture, and 15 years with the Corps of Engineers. Services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ, 7201 Montgomery Blvd. NE. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Arvidson -- Fritz Arvidson, 41, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Adeline Arvidson; father and step-mother, Ray and Robbie Arvidson; two brothers, William Arvidson and wife, Patsy and Edward Arvidson and wife, Denise; four sisters, Nancy Coinman, Gloria Felts and husband, Rick, Cindy Marquez and husband, Phil, and Beth Direen and husband, Alan; six nephews, Matthew Felts, Nevin, Andrew and Patrick Marquez and Scott and Jason Arvidson; and many wonderful friends. Fritz was a wonderful and loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Baldwin -- Winnie Mae Baldwin, 96, a resident of the Ladera Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Albuquerque, died Thursday, December 24, 1998. She is survived by her sister, Corrilea; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Marian Cannady; her parents; and her brothers, Thadeus Charles (T.C.), Carl, Winfred, Roland, and Glenn. Winnie was born on September 4, 1902 in Ft. Chadbourne, TX to Winfred and Ora Belle Baldwin. The family moved to the Estancia Valley and eventually to Albuquerque. She was employed by Charles Ilfeld as a bookkeeper from 1920 until the company was purchased and closed in 1970. Winnie was an active member of the Central Methodist Church from the time she moved to Albuquerque until she became too ill to attend services. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. Marty Singleterry officiating. Chreist -- Frederick Martin Chreist, Sr. Frederick Martin Chreist, Sr., 86, Professor Emeritus of The University of New Mexico and a resident of Albuquerque for over 50 years, passed away on December 28, 1998. Fritz, as he was known to his many friends and colleagues, was born in South Bend, Indiana on August 23, 1912. His loving wife Bernice preceded him in death in 1979. He is survived by son Fred, Jr. and wife Jo Ann, son Steve and wife Judy, son Bill and wife Cindy, all of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Scott, Brenda, Ryan, Randy and Jessica; two Great grandchildren, Lauren and Mitchell. Also surviving is his brother Louis of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis R. Chreist, Sr., and mother Mattie Martin Chreist. Fred graduated from Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and the Depauw tennis team. He received his MA in speech from Northwestern University. After working in the South Bend public schools as a speech clinician he served in the Pacific with the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was separated from the Navy as a Lt. Commander and entered the Doctoral program in Speech Pathology at Northwestern University. In 1947 Fred moved the family to Albuquerque where he was hired to establish a speech pathology and audiology program at the University of New Mexico. In 1949 the division of speech pathology was elevated to department status and Fred soon returned to complete his Ph.D. at Northwestern. After completing his Ph.D. Fred continued to teach at UNM for over 31 years. He was instrumental in the founding of the Albuquerque Speech and Hearing Clinic, the New Mexico cleft palate Team, and a Masters degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology at UNM. Fred also was a major influence in UNM's creation of a program in English as a second language. Numerous foreign students over a number of decades benefited from his commitment in addition to his skill. During his tenure at UNM he wrote numerous articles and books. He retired from UNM in 1978. Fred was very active in the Albuquerque community, where he was one of the founding fathers of St. Marks on the Mesa Episcopal Church and St. Thomas of Canterbury, the Episcopal church on The University of New Mexico campus. As an active member of St. Thomas he served in many lay capacities including Senior Warden of the Vestry. St. Thomas was the love of his community life and he truly enjoyed the spirit of peace he received from this association. An active community volunteer, he also gave freely of his time and talent in helping children who were challenged by various speech impediments. Fred was a dedicated bicyclist, who could be seen each day riding from the University to his home in the city. After retirement his goal was to ride at least 100 miles a week, which he easily accomplished. A tireless worker, he and Bernice built their own cabin in the Taos Mountains, which became their retreat to hike, write and be close to God and nature. All of"Fritz's" family will miss him dearly. There is great comfort in knowing he has gone to a better place to be with his beloved"Bernie". The family would like to thank Manzano Del Sol and Hospice for their loving care during his last months. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, December 31, 1998 at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas of Canterbury, 425 University NE, Albuquerque, NM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fred M. Cordova -- Mrs. Lucy S. Cordova died Tuesday in Albuquerque at the age of 83. She is survived by her son, Billy Mora and wife, Mary Ann; brother, John Ortega; sisters, Fita Ortega and Jean Padilla; sister-in-law, Teresita Mora; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and special nieces, Marcela Anaya and Dorothy Duran. Funeral Services for Mrs. Cordova will be held on Thursday at the San Ignacio Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ralph Mora, William Mora, Vincent Mora, Mark Mora, Michael Mora and Paulette Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be Louie Nogales, Joe Nogales, Fred Nogales, James Mora, Daniel Mora, John Paul Mora and Jason Mora. A Rosary for Mrs. Cordova will be recited on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 3rd St. SW.
