Obituary for Bell

Francis E. Bell (Frank), age 85, resident of Albuquerque for 50 years passed away at the Paloma Blanca Nursing Home on Monday, May 21, 2001. He was born February 7, 1916 in Olean, New York to the late Harold S. and Marion (Oakleaf) Bell. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bell of Albuquerque; two daughters, Susan Bell of Santa Fe, Katherine Koster of Sudbury, Massachusetts, and one brother, H. S. Bell Jr. of Madison, New Jersey; two grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Princeton University in 1937 where he majored in political science at the Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs. Mr. Bell was a WW II naval veteran serving in the Pacific Theater throughout the war. He survived the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, taking his destroyer to sea while under fire. Following the war he remained active in the Naval Reserve, throughout his life attaining the rank of Commander, USNR. In 1947 he married Nancy Hartshorne of East Orange, NJ. In 1951 Mr. Bell brought his family from the East to live in Albuquerque and rapidly became a passionate, enthusiastic promoter of the many cultural and natural benefits of life in New Mexico. He loved the outdoors involving the family in camping and hiking outings throughout this and neighboring states. He also enjoyed international travel visiting Europe, Mexico and South America on many occasions. He was important to his many friends in New Mexico, Scandinavia, England, Mexico, Chile and the Eastern U.S. While living in Albuquerque he was associated with the Sandia National Laboratory where he recruited technical personnel from across the country to serve at the Laboratory. He was also involved in the Laboratory's Affirmative Action Program as well as other personnel matters. His last assignment at the Laboratory was as a member of the legal staff. His civic duties consisted of Vice President and board member of the Chaparral Girl Scout Council. He participated in major fund drives for his Alma Mater and Pitzer College, Claremont, California. He was a National Trustee and local Board Member for the Amigos de las Americas, a paramedical organization that sends youth to field experiences in Central and South America. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in the Sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. on Friday May 25, 2001.
