Obituary for Carson

Colonel USAF Retired Charles Edgar Carson, 88, of Silver City passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001 in Gila Regional Medical Center. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1915 N. Swan Street with Reverend Bob Reese officiating. Interment with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #18 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3347 will follow at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. Colonel Carson was born March 14, 1913 in Hancock, NY. He was the son of Edgar Paul Carson and Bertha Mohn Carson. He was married to Ellen Harriette Hollingsworth who preceded him in death after fifty-six years of marriage. He is survived by one daughter, Elaine Montague and her husband, Gary of Albuquerque, NM; one son, Bob Carson and his wife, Alma of Silver City; two grandchildren, Kevin Carson and his wife, Kristy of Hurley, NM and Brian Carson and his wife, Cheresse of Surprise, AZ. Colonel Carson was a man of science. He was a professor of physics at Emory University in Atlanta, GA until joining the United States Army in 1943. At the end of World War II he joined the United States Air Force and enjoyed a challenging career managing scientific research facilities, including assignments at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM; Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH; the Pentagon in Arlington, VA; the Office of Aerospace Research in Washington, DC and Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, NM. After his military retirement in 1967, Colonel Carson taught high school physics and chemistry in Taos, NM. He retired from teaching in 1977 and he and his wife, moved to Santa Fe, NM where they lived until moving to Silver City in 1982. Colonel Carson and his wife were avid volunteers, donating more than 10,000 hours of service to the hospital auxiliaries in Taos, Santa Fe and Silver city and for a time he was the volunteer manager of the Auxiliary Gift Shop at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was an active member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Silver City. He was a member of several community organizations including the Kiwanis Club of Silver City, the American Legion and the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce, where he volunteered as an information specialist. Colonel Carson was a member of the New Mexico Education Association, the Grant County Retired Teachers, the Westerners, the Silver City Museum Society and the Friends of the Library Association. He was a member of the the New York Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Retired Officers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was also a member of the Beta Kappa Social Fraternity, the Chi Beta Phi Scientific Fraternity and the Gama Sigma Journalistic Fraternity. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1915 N. Swan Street, Silver City, NM or El Refugio, 800 S. Robert Street, Silver City, NM.
