Obituary for Anderson

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday July 07, 2001

Carl C. Anderson, Sr. was born in Naples, OK on January 22, 1911. He peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001. One of ten children, Anderson grew up in the Oklahoma oil fields where his father was a poor teaming contractor. From these humble beginnings Carl began a life of accomplishment that exemplified the American dream. The pressing needs of his large family made hard work and long hours a necessity. When most young men were in school, Carl was learning the lifelong lessons of self-reliance, responsibility, and fierce determination. In the depths of the Depression, Carl purchased his first truck and began hauling and laying pipe for various oil companies. This led to the formation of Anderson Brothers Corporation, a pipeline contracting company. In 1941, Anderson was awarded extensive pipeline contracts for the construction of the vitally important Big Inch and Little Inch pipelines. These were used to transport oil for our military forces overseas. Anderson Brothers advanced pipelining technology with many methods they perfected, especially in the area of rock excavation. Other commendable accomplishments include two Mississippi River crossings, a dredged pipeline across Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana and one across Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. In 1955, Carl became interested in New Mexico uranium exploration. Eager to expand his operations, Anderson acquired leases on many valuable sections including the legendary Section 30, which proved to be the richest uranium section discovered at that time. He was later able to merge his interests with Kerr-McGee Corporation and became one of their major stockholders. For many years, Anderson also operated a large trucking company hauling uranium ore in the Grants, NM area. Though he was born in Oklahoma, traveled the world and found great fortune in New Mexico, Carl always considered himself a Texan. Carl was actively managing his investments until his recent illness. He was particularly proud of his commercial cattle ranching operation, the Anderson Double Arrow Ranch near Marlin, Texas. Not only did Carl have great success in the world of business, he was a treasured friend to many. His warm charisma made him welcome in any group. Carl was totally without pretense and was most comfortable among the hard working rural people who reminded him of his early life. Anyone who knew Carl has a personal story of his generous spirit and genuine kindness. Carl was a man who valued his family above all else. His long and full life included the loss of his beloved wife, Marie Jo; sons, Maxie L. and Carl Clay Jr.; and daughter, Carroll Jane. Surviving family includes daughter, Jennifer Bird of Austin; brother, Larry Anderson of Oklahoma City; sister, Lolita Lemming of Grove, Oklahoma; Central Texas grandchildren, Carl C. III, Janiece, Stephen, and Teresa; New Mexico grandsons, Michael, Kristian, and Timothy; and California granddaughters, Stephanie Pugash and Cynthia Vasquez. Anderson was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Carl's extraordinary life will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Cook Walden Funeral Home 14501 North IH 35. Instead of flowers, Carl's family would encourage you to make a contribution in his name to the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home. A giant has walked among us and we shall miss him.MRS. FLORA M.
