Obituary for Walker

Nellita Elizabeth Walker, died at home on Friday, January 3, 2003. She was born October 18, 1918 in New Orleans, to Louis and Lillian Mejia. The parents divorced, and Nellita traveled with her father who was an orchestra cellist. Upon his death, Nellita lived in New Orleans with her mother. Nellita came to Albuquerque to enter the University of New Mexico in 1932 where she met Andrew Ralph Walker. Nellita earned a BA in English, and the couple married on December 29, 1937. Nellita worked for the Albuquerque Journal and reported for the International News Service. She started the Youth Employment Service in 1952. In 1966, Nellita earned a MA in education and became a teacher, then a reading specialist. Nellita was preceded in death by her youngest son, Todd in 1969, and by her husband in 1996. She leaves a son, Duff Walker and wife, Elise; grandsons, Kirk, Scott and wife, Amber; great-grandchildren, Max, Sophia, and Analise. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 13, 2003 at the UNM Alumni Chapel, call 277-5808 for directions.
