Obituary for Kelly

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday January 01, 2003

Robert P. Kelly. The Kelly family is saddened to announce the death of Robert P. Kelly, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. Bob's gifts to us have been many. His virtue and generosity, his consistency and skill, his profound love of God, wife, family, and friends--through these Bob has inspired us all. Those of us who looked to Bob as a source of strength know how his presence will be missed and how his spirit will continue to thrive in everything we do. Robert Parker Kelly was born on July 17, 1929 in Highland Park, IL to Tom and Ita Kelly. A resident of Albuquerque since 1943, Bob graduated from St. Mary's High School and attended The University of New Mexico. For over 40 years, he worked at Sandia National Laboratories, where his duties included department manager of both labor relations and security; he retired in January 1992. Bob was an avid Notre Dame football fan and an avid golfer who once won the Kelly Golf Invitational, an annual event he relished. He was a respected member of Annunciation Parish for over 40 years, where he acted as a lector, a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of both the Social Concerns Ministry and of the Companions on the Journey. The great joy of Bob's life was his large and devoted family, which includes his wife Dolly, his seven children and their spouses (Bob and Barbara Kelly; Jane and Jim Blankenship; Mike and Marianne Kelly; Pat Kelly and Lori Hunt; Brian and Julie Kelly; Dan and Suzanne Kelly; Matt and Marianthe Kelly), his fifteen grandchildren (Jennifer and husband Phil Lewis; Crystal, David, and Jonathan Kelly; Sarah, Sam, Mary, and Leah Blankenship; Meghan Kelly; Sophie, Aidan, and Catherine Kelly; Camille Kelly; Jane and Claire Kelly), and his two great-grandchildren (Arwyn and Alhana Lewis). To his wife Dolly, Bob was a loving husband and friend for over 52 years; to his children and grandchildren, he was a model of warmth and integrity; and to all who knew him, Bob Kelly was a man of intelligence, sensitivity, and fine company. Bob is also survived by his brother Jim and his wife Theresa, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Tom. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canossian Sisters, 5625 Isleta SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105, or a charity of your choice. Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Thursday, January 2, 2003 at 8:30 A.M. at Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont NE, with Father Ronald L. Bruckner, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7900 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
