Obituary for Chavez

John Hudson Chavez, 87, and a longtime resident of Gallup, died on March 6, 2003 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in Sugarett, NM to Sefarino and Delia Hern Chavez. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. An avid golfer, he golfed five days a week and shot"his age" and under until his death. He was a baseball umpire, umpiring the Connie Mack Word Series for seven years. As the coach for Rehoboth Mission High School, he led the baseball team to the State Championship. He also played the sport and managed the semi-pro baseball team,"Gamerco". Mr. Chavez was honored to receive the key to the city of Gallup when July 31, 1991 was declared"Hudson Chavez Day". Mr. Chavez is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Chavez of Albuquerque; children, Bernie Chavez of Aurora, CO and Elaine Deland of San Francisco, CA; sisters, Martha Hooker and Carmen Lubke; and several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Temple Baptist Church, 1613 Arizona Street NE with Pastor J. Curtis Goldman officiating. Inurnment will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Temple Baptist Church or a favorite charity in memory of John H. Chavez.
