Obituary for Matthews

Cleve E. Matthews, Lieutenant Colonel, USA (Ret), 64, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margareta Matthews of Albuquerque; son, Col. Earl D. Matthews and wife Debra and granddaughters Nicole and Christine of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Andreas H. Matthews and wife, Twyla and granddaughters Melissa and Kristen of Sugarland, TX; son, Dr. Jeffrey J. Matthews and wife, Renee and granddaughters Kathryn and Emily of University Place, WA; mother, Margaret Lampe of Dodge City, KS; brother, John Matthews of Dodge City, KS; stepbrother, Frank Lampe of Dallas, TX.; stepbrother, Mark Lampe of Offerle, KS.; stepbrother, Joseph Lampe of Fowler, KS.; and stepsister, Mary Lois Sullivan of Dodge City, KS. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl E. Matthews; stepfather, Henry F. Lampe; brother, Doral C. Matthews; and stepbrother, Linus Lampe. Colonel Matthews enlisted in the Regular Army on April 10, 1958 and received a direct commission in March 1965 as Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps. He retired from the US Army on November 1, 1983. He served two tours in Vietnam where he participated in five campaigns with the First Infantry Division. He has many awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, two awards of the Bronze Start Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Medal and three awards of the Army Commendation Medal. He earned a bachelors degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a masters degree at Boston University. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked in Real Estate Development until July 2000 when he retired as Vice President of Sandia Properties, Ltd. Co. He was active in the New Mexico Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He served as the Chapter's President in 1994. He was an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, Columbia College, Chapman College and National College. Rosary will be recited Friday, May 9, 2003, at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, with Deacon Alex Trujillo reciting. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 10, 2003 at 3:00 p.m., at John XXIII Catholic Church, 4831 Tramway Ridge Drive NE, with Father Arkad Biczak, Celebrant. Interment will take place Monday, May 12, 2003, at 2:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Col. Earl D. Matthews, Andreas H. Matthews, Dr. Jeffrey J. Matthews, Robert M. Murphy, Joseph Hattrup and William Knapp. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Friday, May 9, 2003, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requestS memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
