Obituary for Young

Arlene Octavia Orme Young, 84, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico in her home on Friday, June 20, 2003. Her son, John and daughter-in-law, Jeanne were at her bedside. Arlene was one of eight children born to Paul Lafayette Orme of St. Aubert / Chamois, Missouri and Fannie Elizabeth Kelly of Fulton, Missouri. Her siblings Clarence, Ercil, Beltron, Dorsey, Velma Loretta, Jeanette; and her half-brother, Melvin Moore, all preceded her in death. Arlene married John Young in Kansas City in June, 1941. Their 52 year marriage ended with John's death in 1994. The union produced a son, John Edward. She lived happily with her son, John and his wife, Jeanne for the final years of her life in Albuquerque, from August of 1994 to the present time. In addition, Arlene is survived by her sister, Evelyn Caruthers of Kansas City, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews, including Vivian Sims of Denver, Irma Jean Coe (Ulysses) of Altadena, California, Patricia Caruthers of Kansas City, Kansas, Bertram Caruthers, Jr. (Cynthia) of Kansas City, Kansas, Edward Horney (Charmaine) of Chicago, Illinois, Lorraine Ross (Ben) of Detroit, Michigan, Barbara Stafford of Kansas City, Kansas, Betty Mathis of Kansas City, Kansas, Harriet Caruthers of Mesa, Arizona, Janice Johnson of Kansas City, Kansas, as well as a host of cousins, relatives, and friends. Arlene attended public school in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Sumner High School in 1936. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in home economics and science, and subsequently earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1968 with a concentration in reading education. She also received additional course credits from Central Missouri State, Pittsburg State, and Ottawa universities. Dedicated to education, Arlene received certification to teach a variety of subjects at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels in the state of Missouri. Arlene's distinguished career in the teaching profession spanned nearly half a century from 1940 to 1985. Beginning as a kindergarten teacher and then in various elementary grades, G.E.D. programs, Adult Education, and later as a consultant in Developmental Reading at Donnelly College, she impacted the learning and growth of innumerable students in Greater Kansas City, and she was a model for her peers as well. Throughout her life, Arlene was a deeply spiritual Christian, a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A lifelong member of her family church, The Third Street Church of God of Kansas City, KS she served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Board of Trustees, and a member of the Board of Christian Education. She was a member of the Satellite Club and the GeacÈ Club, and lifetime member of the Phi Delta Kappa professional sorority's Gamma Beta Chapter for which she organized and assisted in conducting reading workshops. Active in community service as well, Arlene enjoyed her volunteer work in the Kansas City, Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross transportation motor pool, and tutoring for the Laubach Way to Reading technique program at Kansas City Kansas Community College. She was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as well as the Shepard's Center of Kansas City, Kansas. In Albuquerque, she was a member of the Americans with Disabilities Act Committee of the Share Your Care Program at the Bear Canyon Senior Center. Her gracious personality and her warmth and charm earned her many friends, and her regular involvement and active participation served as an example to all. She was loved and appreciated and will be remembered for her positive attitude, her gentle voice, and engaging smile. She enriched the lives of everyone she met. Funeral Dervices will be held at the Third Street Church of God in Kansas City, Kansas at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2003. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery.
