Obituary for Chato

Edgar Chato passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 peacefully at home in his sleep. He was born in Tohatchi, New Mexico on October 7, 1917. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary R. Chato; children Sr. Mary Theresa Chato, SBS, of Bensalem, PA, Genevieve Chato and husband Edward Seaton of Kayenta, AZ, Joseph Chato and partner Connie Bell of Santa Fe, Bernadette Chato and partner Robert Charlie of Fairbanks, AK, Renee Chato and partner Rick Tapia of Santa Fe, Michaela Fong and husband Stephen of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Manuelita Beck and husband, Brian Beck of Albuquerque, Joshua Chato of Dallas, Luis Chato of Ithaca, NY, Jeremy Chato of Las Cruces, Edward Chato-Seaton of Kayenta AZ, William Fong of Santa Fe and Corey Fong of Santa Fe; brother Vincent Chato and wife, Marie of Gallup, sisters, Jeanette Thomas of Tohatchi, NM, Sallie Johnny of Fort Defiance, AZ, Ella Begay and husband, Allan of Albuquerque, Sadie Hardy of Navajo, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Chato was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nedebah Chato; brothers, Melvin Chato, John Chato, Everett Chato; and sisters, Yanebah Francisco, Monica Chato, Mary Chato, and infant sister. Eddie graduated from Fort Wingate High School and attended Haskell Institute of Lawrence, Kansas for two years prior to being drafted into the US Army. He served in General George S. Patton's 3rd Army, 71st Infantry Division in Europe during WWII and was awarded the Silver Star for"gallantry in action against the enemy." After the war, he married his wife Mary in St. Michaels, AZ. He then attended the Western Business School in Albuquerque. After completing his studies, he worked for Franciscan Furniture and then worked 20 years for American Furniture in Albuquerque until his retirement in 1985. Eddie was a founding member of Holy Ghost Parish, Albuquerque. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, No. 641, and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In previous years, he had been an avid golfer and die-hard Yankee, Notre Dame and San Francisco 49ers fan. His favorite memories were of camping trips with his children of which he recorded many hours with his trusty 8mm camera. Celebration of Eddie's life will begin on Thursday, July 3, with a Rosary at 8 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona St. SE, Albuquerque. Fr. Thomas Mayefske will officiate. Internment will take place Monday, July 7, at 11:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Pallbearers are Joshua Chato, Luis Chato, Jeremy Chato, Melvin Chato Jr., Edward Seaton, Stephen Fong, Brian Beck and Rick Tapia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, 1663 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, PA 19020, or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Kathryn Caldwell, and Lovelace Sandia s Dr. Charles Benton, Dr. Sally Harris and their homecare nurses for their support and medical assistance during Eddie's illness.
