Obituary for Schlenker

Hazel Helen Hamblen Schlenker. Hazel passed away at age 91 on June 22, 2003. She was born January 21, 1912 in Garfield County, Oklahoma to Earl and Loda Harris Hamblen. Earl was a farmer and oil well driller, and Loda was an Irish-English-Cherokee housewife. Oldest of six children, Hazel was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas, Cleveland, Oliver, Eidom; and by sister, Dorothy. Through her father, Hazel was related to gospel singer and songwriter Stuart Hamblen ("It Is No Secret";"This Old House"). Through her mother, Hazel was related to Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the U.S. After graduation from high school in Shamrock, Oklahoma, Hazel moved with her family to Parmer County, Texas, to a farm near the Rhea (German) Community. It was there that she met Harold Milton Schlenker, whom she married in Clovis, New Mexico November 22, 1930. Harold died September 28,1991. Hazel and Harold had five children, four of whom survived Hazel. She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter Linda Gail Pearson, who died April 22, 2003. Surviving children are: Loda Pauline Tischler and husband, Melvin, of Lubbock, TX; Kendall Oliver Schlenker and wife, Wilda, of Placitas, NM; Lea Ann Keller, widow of Bob Keller, of Placerville, CA; Charles Milton Schlenker and wife, Ann, of El Dorado Hills, CA; and by son-in-law, William E."Bill" Pearson, surviving husband of Linda, of Bernalillo, NM. Hazel is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 11, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Hart presiding. Hazel's T.G.I.F. group at First Presbyterian Church will be Honorary Pallbearers. Burial of cremains will be with those of Harold and Linda at the cemetery near Friona, in Parmer County, Texas. To those so inclined, the family requests contributions to your own Churches or favorite charities, in lieu of flowers. The family especially appreciates the care and kindness provided to Hazel in recent months by Lana Hutchinson and her staff at Andrew House Assisted Living. The family also thanks Vista Hospice Care for its help and concern in the final days.
