Obituary for Wegner

Retired Army Colonel William Wegner died August 22, 2003 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Col. Wegner served 31 years in the Army Medical Service Corps. He served as Executive Officer of West Point Hospital, Ft. Gordon, and Letterman General Hospital. In 1969 he retired from the Army and moved to Albuquerque where served as Undersecretary of the New Mexico Department of Hospitals and Institutions. In 1970 he joined the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center as Administrator of Mental Health Center. He remained with the University for 15 years, and from 1977 to 1979 was Administrator of University Hospital. He was a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, and served as Regent for New Mexico from 1977 to 1979. He retired in 1985 but continued consulting in health care matters for several years. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Philippine Independence Ribbon, and National Defense Service Medal. He is survived by one son William E. Wegner of Los Angeles, CA; two daughters Faye Wegner of Albuquerque, NM. and Leslie Rigoulot of Grapevine Texas; one sister Marge Nealon of Albany, NY; seven grandchildren Jean Marie Dowling, CPT William M. Dowling, Kenny Rigoulot, Chris Rigoulot, Matthew K. Wegner, Michael W. Wegner, and Kristen M. Wegner; one great grandchild Tyler M. Dowling. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Jean C. Wegner, one brother Edward Wegner, and one sister Agnes Stout. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 26, 2003 from 6:00 ñ 7:00 pm in Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Avenue SE, and Albuquerque. Services will be Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at 10:00 am in Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
