Obituary for Sherrod

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday August 20, 2003

Dr. J. Howard Sherrod, DVM, a long time resident of Corrales, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2003. Howard was born on May 29, 1928 in Goodland, Kansas to Charles and Helen Dye Sherrod. A farmer at heart, he graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture. After graduation from college, Howard went on to proudly serve his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force. Upon completing his military service, he married his wife Del and went back to Kansas State University and graduated Veterinary School in 1958. From 1960-1963, he owned and operated the Town and Country Animal Clinic in the North Valley. He then spent the next four years with the Lovelace Foundation. In 1966, Howard moved to Corrales with his wife and family and started the Valverde Animal Clinic, first operating in his home and later moving to the current location in Corrales. Throughout his practice, Howard continually supported the 4H Program and the FFA in diverse ways including many sponsorships and by teaching veterinary science. He helped in establishing the Sandoval County Fair in Cuba, served at the Bernalillo County 4H Fair, and assisted with veterinary services for the New Mexico State Fair every year. Howard was a member of the AVMA and member and past president of the NMVNA. He also served as past president of the Rio Rancho Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Howard loved to garden, enjoyed trail rides, and spending time with his family. He truly enjoyed his profession and some would say he wasn't their veterinarian,"he was their pediatrician!". His compassion for animals, the accomplishment and knowledge of his craft, and his ability to enrich so many people and animals around him, will live on in each of them forever. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Del of the family home; his children, Susan and husband Dave Sears of Hawaii, and Mark and wife Debby of Corrales; brothers, Bruce Sherrod and wife Judy, Cecil Sherrod; sisters, Mary and husband Gene Leber, Loretta and husband Mark Stukey, Judy and husband, Ed Schoenberger; his four grandchildren, Lena, Wayne Kyle and Anna Sears; and a host of loving friends, family, and animals who will deeply miss him. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church (Golf Course Rd.@ 19th) in Rio Rancho with The Rev. Walter F. Smith III, as officiant.
