Obituary for Callan

Dr. Laurence B. Callan, Ph.D., J.D. passed away on July 24, 2003 due to pneumonia and coronary obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure. Born June 15, 1932 in Chicago the oldest of three children, to Laurence Joseph Callan and Cecilia McShane Callan, both deceased as well as his sister, Sheila Donahue. Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps 1949 to 1951 and the United States Navy"Sea Bees" 1951 - 1953. Was honorably discharged from both. Earned B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1956, Masters in Health and Physical Education and recreation in 1957, P.h.D Public Health Administration in 1966 at Arizona State College (now Arizona State University). Was one of the original campus police officers and later a Tempe, AZ police officer. He was an assistant coach at Phoenix College in football in 1964 and baseball, where they won the national Junior College Championships in football in 1964 and baseball in 1963 and 1965. He studied pre-med at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Callan earned his Jurist Doctorate in San Diego, CA in 1999 at the age of 66. He was an administrator and faculty member at the University of California at Berkely, 1996 to 1970; University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, 1970 to 1972; Associate Director of the Navajo Health Authority, Window Rock, Navajo Nation, AZ 1972 - 1975; Associate Director of Cancer Control and Rehab at the National Institute of Health, Washington, D.C. 1975 - 1976; Deputy Director Cancer Control Program at the University of New Mexico, 1976 - 1981; faculty member in Public Health Administrative Services at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu 1981 - 1982 and entered private business as a licensed insurance agent 1982 - 1994. Married Geraldean (Jerri) Glover, daughter of Billy and Eileen Glover, longtime Tempe residents in December 1956 and had five sons, Brian, retired Marine Corps CWO II, Tempe, AZ, who preceded him in death September 1, 2002; Sean, educator and doctoral candidate, Honolulu, Hi, Peter, marketing consultant, Miami Beach, FL, Timothy and C. Robert, general contractors, Taos, NM. Married Hilda Nobuko Nagamini in May 1983 and widowed in August 1990. He also had five grandchildren, Cheryl, Michael, Joseph, Erin and Seamus; and three great-grandchildren, Seandean and Bahazhoni and Zoe. Surviving brother, John P. Callan of Florida. Larry was actively involved in the Local Honolulu AA where he had many wonderful friendships and associations. He was a daily communicant at St. Peter and Paul in Honolulu. He was quite the Irish charmer, storyteller, drinker, with an outrageous sense of humor and an avid reader. Cremation and Burial will be at the National Cemetery of the Pacific where his beloved wife, Hilda, is awaiting him. There will be no formal services.
