Obituary for Alley

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday August 07, 2003

Harrison H. Alley, a physician, friend, father and husband, who touched many lives in New Mexico, passed away Monday, August 4, 2003 after a recent hospitalization. Dr. Alley, who always preferred to be called"Harrison", lived in the North Valley of Albuquerque since 1969 when he migrated here from the East for his residency at the University of New Mexico Medical School. Harrison specialized in pediatrics and helped many children and their parents through childhood sicknesses. Some of his patients were even lucky enough to find out that he was one of those rare breed of physicians who made house calls. Harrison also attended to the urgent and emergency medical care of many Bernalillo County and Native American residents while working for Presbyterian and St. Joseph Hospitals. As an accomplished airplane and glider pilot, Harrison used his airplane to commute to Artesia to bring needed medical services there. When not attending to patients, Harrison relaxed by looking after his beautiful horse farm bordering the Bosque where he lived with his wife of 38 years, Anne Reynolds Alley; and raised his two sons, Harrison ("Tai") and Edward ("Ted"). Dr. Alley particularly loved raising and training the foals born on his farm. In the fall and winter he enjoyed riding with the Juan Tomás Hounds across the nearby mesas in vain pursuit of coyotes. In college at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, Harrison had been an excellent lacrosse player. He played on the lacrosse team representing America in 1959 which toured Australia. In the 1970's he helped bring the sport of lacrosse to New Mexico by being a founding member of the UNM Lacrosse Club for whom he played and coached. Harrison Hall Alley was born on 26 November 1938, the second son of James B. and Esther Hall Alley in Washington, D.C. where his father at the time was general counsel of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Thereafter, his parents moved to New York City and Long Island where he was raised. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire in 1956, Washington and Lee University in 1960 and the University of Virginia Medical School in 1969 after serving in U.S. Army Intelligence as a Chinese translator. Besides his wife and two sons, he is survived by a granddaughter, Grace; sisters, Cynthia Alley Andrews of Minneapolis, MN and Jane Lowe Edgerton of Stamford, CT; and a brother, James B. Alley, Jr. of Santa Fe. A celebration of Harrison's life will be held at Ewloe Green Farm, 2532 Elfego Road N.W. at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2003.
