Obituary for Larue

Jay LaRue, 74, a resident of Santa Fe, NM for 25 years, formally of Albuquerque, NM passed away Sunday, April 6, 2003 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born December 20, 1928 in Crockett, TX, to Tom W. & Alie (Cheairs) LaRue. Jay married Juanita Lawler on December 7, 1951, she survives him of their home. Other survivors include two sons, Jim and wife, Sheryl LaRue, Mike and wife, Cristal LaRue; four brothers, Virgil, Irvin, T.W., and Carl LaRue; one sister, Anna Lee Scoggins; and five grandchildren, Mikey, Molly, Mac, Jacque, and Haley LaRue. Jay enlisted in the National Guard almost straight out of High School at age 18, from there he enlisted and served our Country during the Korean Conflict. (Sergeant). Wounded and nearly killed in action in Central Korea, he spent over 18 months on a Navy Hospital ship in the bay of Seoul before moving the spend months more in the Navy Hospital in California. Jay was awarded the Purple Heart and numerous other medals for his service and was very proud of his time in the military. Jay and Juanita trained horses together on the racetrack as a team for almost thirty years and their time on the racetrack was probably to this day Jay's greatest pleasure. Jay and Nita had many great times with good folks on the track, Jay spent a great many hours with the horses he loved, and had a reputation for taking very good care of them - it was indeed a"work of love." Jay was very proud of his three-star letterman status at Soccoro High School. A very talented athlete, he excelled at all sports, but especially football, basketball, and track. He continued to be an avid sports fan all through life, never missing a college or pro game when he could help it. Jay was also passionate about politics and very outspoken about his beliefs, he was indeed very patriotic and believed strongly that Americans had an obligation to be informed and get involved. Jay obviously loved his family very much although he may not have always been able to demonstrate it. He is missed already by both family and friends, who wish him greatest peace. A Memorial will be held Thursday April 10, 2003-11:30 a.m. at the Moriarty Church of Christ, with John C. Booth Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM 832-6130.
