She was the eldest of six children born to Thomas and Anna Long McNerney. Shortly after graduating from St. Vincent's Academy in 1928, Katherine moved to San Francisco and took a job with the newly formed FBI. Her love of teaching and working with young people inspired her to pursue a teaching career which began on Indian reservations in New Mexico and with the Albuquerque Public Schools. She also taught for five years in Turkey and the Philippine Islands at US Air Force bases while touring the Mid-East and Europe. After retiring, Katherine returned to Kansas City. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Thomas and wife Vivian, John (Jack) and wife Rosemary, Eugene and Richard McNerney and her sister Anne McNerney Jordan.
