Obituary for YSTESUND

YSTESUND, IDA Z. Ida Z. Ystesund, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2015 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born in Pennsylvania on October 18, 1921, Ida was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Kenneth A. Ystesund, and her grandson, Alex J. Ystesund. Ida is survived by her sons, Kenneth J. Ystesund and his wife Cindy of Albuquerque, and Keith A. Ystesund of Dolores, Colorado; daughter, Karen Y. Clement and her husband John; grandchildren, Joshua Ystesund, and Amanda Ystesund; her brother Elmer Zern; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born Ida Zern, she grew up on the family farm in Pennsylvania. Ida joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps on November 17th, 1942 in Philadelphia. In August 1943, that service was terminated at Camp Polk, Louisiana upon her enlistment in the Women's Army Corps. She served in the Women's Army Corps during WWII in North Africa (Algeria) and Italy until her honorable discharge on September 4th, 1945 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Ida met Ken Ystesund during her service in North Africa, and they married in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on November 26th, 1947. Ken's job with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service took them to Albuquerque in 1970. Ida enjoyed her children and grandchildren, hiking in the Sandia Mountains, XC skiing, and made the best pies west of the Mississippi. Ida will be deeply missed by her friends and family. A family memorial gathering for the interment of ashes at the Santa Fe National Cemetery is planned for a later date.
