REED, SHIRLEY MAE Age 88, died in her Albuquerque home January 28, 2015, tended by her elder daughter. She was born Shirley Mae Wheeler in Crete, Nebraska, and married Clayton Lewis Reed (1944) of Nunn, Colorado, a marriage that lasted until Clayton's death in 2007. They had three childreneach born in a different stateas Mrs. Reed counts 32 moves in the 64 years of her marriage. Wife and mother, Shirley earned her MA in education from SUNY Cortland in New York. She became an author of children's books while teaching art, remedial reading, and high school English in many of the places she has lived. Shirley also served for 50 years as the family historian for both the Wheeler and Reed family lines, spending her widowhood writing her Wheeler family history. Her archives will be donated to the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln. Shirley and Clayton retired to Albuquerque, NM, in 2004 to enjoy the sunny winters and to be nearer their two oldest children. Shirley Mae Wheeler Reed is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband. She is survived by her three children; Lona Lee, George Lewis, and Suzanne Rae Reed. Shirley and Clayton will be interred at the Riverside Cemetery in Crete, Nebraska, on Wednesday, February 4, 2015.
