Obituary for MONTOYA

MONTOYA, RUDOLFO ELOY (RUDY) Rudy Montoya, a long time resident of Bernalillo, NM, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2014. Rudy was born on March 12, 1927 in Albuquerque, NM the son of Mariano and Rosa Montoya. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows Elementary School and graduated from Bernalillo High School in 1944. After high school he went to Herlong, CA and worked at a munitions depot before joining the Navy on February 27, 1945. He attended boot camp in San Diego, CA and then transferred to New Orleans, LA where he became a Pharmacist's Mate. He left the service on April 30, 1946 after WWII ended due to an injury. Rudy moved to Washington, DC and worked for the Housing Administration. He returned to NM and worked in Los Alamos as a mail courier. He then decided to attend Regis College in Denver, CO where he studied pre-law and political science. While attending college he met and later married Dollie C de Baca of Albuquerque, NM. In 1956 he was elected Sheriff of Sandoval County, at the age of 29, and still holds the honor of being the youngest Sheriff ever elected in Sandoval County. After leaving the Sheriff's Office he went to work for the State of NM Employment Security Commission where he worked as a Tax Representative, Special Investigator, and Chief of Claims. He retired and spent his time farming and developing the land that was inherited from his family. He was a historian and loved sharing stories about his life and family history with his friends and family. "Hero, husband, father, son, friend. Rudy lived his life to the fullest. Each person he met will be better for knowing him." Proverbs 28:1 Rudy was preceded in death by his wife Dollie Montoya and son Paul Montoya-Hatfield. Rudy is survived by his daughter Corinne and her husband Kenneth Marquez of Bernalillo, son Michael and his wife Anne Montoya of Bernalillo, and his grandchildren Jace and Joplin Montoya of Bernalillo, and Kate and Dana Hatfield of Waconia, MN. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 10:30AM at the Daniels Family Funeral Services located at 4310 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124.
