Obituary for ELLIS

ELLIS, WALTON P., PHD age 82, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 after a courageous fight with Leukemia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Lou (Grove) Ellis; parents, Dan and Alpha Ellis; brothers, Joe and Oris Ellis and nephew, Jim Ellis. Walt graduated with a Bachelors in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1953. He was awarded his PhD in Chemistry by the University of Chicago in 1957. He and Martha Lou married on November 4, 1956 and moved to Los Alamos in July of 1957 to start their lives together. Walt was a research chemist at LANL from 1957-1992, where he published numerous research studies worldwide. Walt loved to travel with his family and visited all 7 continents. He had a lifelong passion for learning and sharing his knowledge with others. Walt was known for his sense of humor and contagious laugh. Although Walt had a successful career and traveled extensively, his deepest love was for his family. Mr. Ellis is survived by his children, Eleanor (Elly) Olivas of Los Alamos and Carolyn Ellis - Winkelman and husband Rob of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Rosalia Therese Olivas of Los Alamos and Grace Ann Winkelman of San Diego, CA; as well as numerous other loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 1:00p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Los Alamos, 715 Diamond Drive, with a burial to follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery. The family of Walton P. Ellis wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. James Ziomek, Dr. Eric Bernstein, the nurses and volunteers at the LAMC, ATU and ICU and the Leukemia department at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas.
