BREGMAN, STANLEY IRWIN A Washington lawyer who was a close confidante to both Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Vice President Walter Mondale, died on May 8, 2014 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 83. Mr. Bregman was born on March 20, 1931, in Washington, D. C. as the son of Bo and Sadie Bregman, who were Russian Jewish immigrants. His career in law and politics began when he was elected President of the Young Democrats of America during the Stevenson-Kefauver campaign. During Humphrey's failed attempt to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960 at the Convention held in Chicago, Bregman worked the floor to round up votes for Humphrey. Subsequently, he was an advance man for candidate Lyndon Johnson during the 1960 general election. Bregman graduated from George Washington University and G.W. Law School after having proudly served in the United States Coast Guard. In 1965, he formed a Washington law firm with the nephew of the Speaker of the House, Edward McCormick. Specializing in governmental relations, the firm represented numerous Fortune Five Hundred Companies. One of the clients he most proudly represented was the Washington Senators baseball team. While representing Robert Short of Minneapolis, he negotiated the purchase of the team and later the hiring of Ted Williams as General Manager. In 1969 the law firm was restructured as Bregman, Abell, and Kay. The second named partner, Tyler Abell, had held high-level positions in the Johnson Administration in the Postmaster General's office and as Chief of Protocol in the Department of State. Mr. Bregman's enthusiasm for baseball and politics was inherited by his sons, Benjamin and Samuel, both of whom played baseball for the Lobos at the University of New Mexico. His grandson, Alex Bregman, is now the shortstop for the Louisiana State University baseball team and was the national Freshman of the year in 2013. He wed Sandra Kneifl in 1957 and they were married for thirty-five years. Mr. Bregman is survived by his sister, Suzanne Fields; his sons Ben Bregman of Kauai, Hawaii, Sam Bregman of Albuquerque, New Mexico and his wife, Jackie; his daughter, Emily Gaspers of Santa Monica, California and her husband, Merlin; and his six grandchildren: Alex, Jessica, Anthony, Robert, Brittany and Holiday, of whom he was most proud.
