SNEAD, RODMAN ELDRIDGE PHD Rodman Eldridge Snead, PhD, 83, died March 12 after a long illness at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born May 1, 1931 in Atlantic City, NJ, to the late Eldridge Hatcher Snead and Mabelle Davis Clark, Rod lived on Hemsley Place in Northfield, NJ until he graduated from Friends School in Atlantic City, NJ. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Davis Snead Moore of Beaufort, NC. He is survived by his niece Mary Moore Briggs of Bluffton, SC and his nephew Charles E. Moore, Jr. of Davidsonville, MD. Rod and his family were members of Central United Methodist Church in Linwood, NJ until moving out of the area. Rod received an undergraduate degree in geography and geology from the University of Virginia, a Master's degree in geography from Syracuse University and a PhD in geography from the Coastal Studies Institute at Louisiana State University. He taught at the Graduate School of Geography, Clark University, Worcester, Mass from 1961-1969. In 1969 he joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico where he served as professor and Chair of The Geography Department until his retirement. His major fields of research and teaching included physical geography (geomorphology), climatology, aerial photography interpretation and remote sensing techniques. His primary interest was in coastal desert landforms, especially the coasts of Iran and Pakistan. He traveled to over ninety countries over a period of fifty years and authored numerous books and articles including The World Atlas of Geomorphic Features, and The Atlas of World Physical Features. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield, NJ followed by interment at Atlantic City Cemetery in Pleasantville, NJ.
