Obituary for DAVIDSON

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday December 18, 2013

DAVIDSON, JOAN BERNISE The huge clan of Joan Bernice Stockman Davidson mourns the loss of this beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, funny soul, who was born on December 11th, 1929, who lived with panache and died on December 8, 2013, just short of her 84th birthday. She is survived by her husband Clarence A. "Dave" Davidson; the six children to whom she dedicated unstinting effort: Margaret Ellen Carbonatto and husband Alain of Caloundra, Australia; Janie Ann Daniels and husband Michael of Tijeras, NM; John Christopher Davidson and partner Joan Irey of Albuquerque; Mary Beth Maloy and husband Dion Patrick of Albuquerque; Christine Marie Mayer and husband Randy of Albuquerque; and Carol Lee Andersen and husband Kevin of Houston, TX; 10 biological grandchildren and eight grandchildren by marriage & six great-grandchildren. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Margaret and John Stockman & her sister Christine Brown of Long Island, New York, where Joan lived 22 years until her marriage to Dave in late 1951. Joan completed her formal education in 1951 with the receipt of a trail-blazing double major in English and Business from Adelphi University, but would continue informal study & learning throughout her life through her beloved hobby of reading, her enthusiastic pursuit of travel & her engagement with music. While Joan's renown as a gardener highlighted a remarkable ability to cultivate flowers in even the harshest environments, her capacity for encouraging growth in people constituted the most valuable legacy to those whose lives she touched. Ever available as sympathetic listener, cheerleader, and mentor, Joan's wisdom, love, and optimism instilled hope in the many who came to her for solace and encouragement. Modeling a life lived in wholeness, tenderness, and joy, Joan was a regular member of Prince of Peace Catholic Community. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 20th, 2013, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary on Lomas. Her memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 21st, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave., N.E. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
