Obituary for MCGUIRE

MCGUIRE, SHELDON L. Sheldon L. McGuire died on Wednesday, October 23, 2013. He was born June 18, 1929 in Morrowville, Kansas. His wife and close friend, Patience (Pat) McGuire, who was a school librarian. His step-children are Rob and Laurie Groman (Amarillo, TX) and Mariann Groman (Albuquerque, NM); two grandchildren, Elizabeth Groman Hay and Jacob Groman. His parents (deceased) were Willis and Belle McGuire. Their parenting skills brought a close family relationship with six children. Sheldon and his twin sister, Shirley (Albuquerque, NM) were the youngest in this family also including Charlotte Wagoner (Grand Junction, CO), Dr. David and Ruth McGuire (Denton, TX), Jim and Jane McGuire (Hutchinson, KS) and Ben and Barbara McGuire (Kansas City, KS). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sheldon enjoyed 36 years working with the Albuquerque Public Schools from 1953 through 1989 in nine school locations, and the University of New Mexico's College of Education graduate program with aspiring school administrators. He was referred to as the students' principal, spending much time with them, listening to their suggestions from the Principal's Student Advisory Committee. Young students reflected that "he's always on the playground with us". Sheldon cherished many close friendships with students, teachers and parents throughout the city. He was an active member of the Twosom Church School Class at the First United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. Cremation has been handled by French Mortuary. At his request there will be no memorial service, knowing that friends and associates will honor him in their own way in groups, or in solitude.
