Obituary for RICE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday October 03, 2013

RICE, GENEVIEVE PATRICIA Genevieve Patricia Rice passed away quietly on September 29, 2013 at age 91. "Pat" was born in Douglas, AZ on March 3, 1922 to Frederick (Ted) and Mary Genevieve Trotter Rice. Pat outlived most of her family but is survived by her niece, Susan Kroeger and her children and grandchildren in California, and by her cousin, Margaret Jane Rice of Douglas, AZ. Private services will be held later. Pat moved with her family to California where she lived in Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and Mill Valley. She attended University of the Pacific and listed in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. While in the WAC, Pat served as a Classification and Personnel Specialist in New Guinea and the Philippines. She was awarded two campaign medals, a good conduct medal, and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star. This accomplishment was certainly a rarity for a woman of her generation. After the war, Pat was a Personnel Specialist for the State of California. She retired and moved to Placitas, NM and later to Rio Rancho. Pat was an avid fly fisherman and tied her own flies by hand. She raised and trained dogs and was active in several kennel clubs both in California and in New Mexico. She took in rescued cats during her time at Alcantalada Vista/Fairwinds. She enjoyed playing the piano, painting, and playing pool. She also loved collecting both traditional and contemporary Native American art. Her ashes will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to any animal rights or care group or to the Salvation Army in Pat Rice's honor.
