DOAK, VERNON Vernon Doak, a resident of Albuquerque, since 1955, died at home Friday, August 16, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Doak, of Albuquerque; his children, David (Barbara), Suzanne McLeod (Jon), Joanna Wild, and Andrew (Rhonda); eight grandchildren, Brittany, Elizabeth, Tyler, Jocelyn, Coleen, Alex, Michael, and James. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jennings, Edward, and Wyeth, and his sisters, Florence and Jane. He served in the Navy during World War II and saw action in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters aboard the USS Hyde and the USS Maryland. He attended New Mexico State University after the war and graduated with a Bachelor Science degree in Biology. After moving to Albuquerque, he worked for the City of Albuquerque as a health inspector and eventually became the executive director of the Albuquerque Urban Renewal Agency where he worked to improve living conditions in the various impoverished and disadvantaged neighborhoods of Albuquerque, as well as the revitalization of the downtown area. Vernon was then employed by Albuquerque National Bank (ANB), which later became part of Bank of America (BOA). He worked in the real estate loan department and at one time, was the project manager for the construction of, and transition to, the new ANB main office building and parking structure at Third St. and Roma in 1974. While employed by ANB, Vernon continued his community service and was elected to serve two terms on the board of directors for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority from 1972 to 1976. He later retired from BOA after 28 years of service. In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed gardening, remodeling his home, travel, cooking, and most of all spending time with his loving and adoring family. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Sandia Hospice (Jamie Howard and Brian McMillan) and especially to the wonderful in-home health care providers, Reve Martinez, Melissa Appleyard, Rose Miera, and Natasha Quintana. In lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity in Vernon's name.
