Obituary for BOYD

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday August 13, 2013

BOYD, CRESTINA ROMERO RUIZ Crestina , age 80, went home to our heavenly Father on August 8, 2013. She is survived by husband David Boyd of Placitas; her sisters Lucy Romero, Teresa Garcia, & Ida Perea; and children Sylvia, Donna, Jean, Patty, Patrick, and Manuel; as well as many loving grand- and great-grandchildren. Crestina was born in Jarales on October 9, 1932, to Delfina Garcia and Manuel Romero. Crestina dedicated her life to helping others, often sacrificing her own safety and well-being in order to benefit those in her community. She pioneered early childhood development in Albuquerque, founding the first Head Start programs in the 1960s in Barelas, as well as co-founding PB&J Family Services. Among her family, Crestina was beloved for her ability to make mashed potatoes that would put Gordon Ramsay to shame. She was also known for her never-ending sass and wit that made family get-togethers interesting (and a little bit intimidating to those so lacking in a sense of self-preservation as to challenge her in debate) and enlightening. She was preceded in death by former husband Ramon B. Ruiz, and children Kathryn, Carol and Ernest. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, August 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, August 14th at 9:00a.m., also at Sacred Heart. Interment will occur at San Jose de Armijo.
