Obituary for DEBUCK

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday March 09, 2013

DEBUCK, JOHN GILBERT "JACK" Age 80, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, with his family by his side. Jack was born on November 22, 1932 to Margaret and Gilbert DeBuck in Detroit, Michigan and was happily an only child for 12 years, until his pesky brother, Robert (Bob) came along and stole his parent's affections. While a major annoyance in toddlerhood, Bob quickly stole Jack's heart, too, and together they weathered the storms of life's ups and downs. Jack served in the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and completed a tour with the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Forrestal. Post service, he earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Wayne State University, and a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of New Mexico. Jack taught math in secondary schools for several years in Albuquerque and Australia, until he became a civil engineer with the Corps of Engineering and the U.S. Forest Service, from which he retired. An avid outdoorsman, Jack spent many hours hiking in the Sandia Mountains daily and loved his camping trips with his sons and grandsons. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy; his sons David DeBuck, Rob DeBuck (wife, Linda); grandsons, Sean, Kyle, Ryan, and Derek; his loving brother, Bob DeBuck (wife, Ruth); and many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and the greatest loss of his life, his grandson, Jesse. Jack loved his grandchildren deeply and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to make them happy, and protected them fiercely like no other. The family would like to thank Adam, Grace, and Cesar for their loving care and attention to Jack during his stay at Grace Adult Care Home Assisted Living Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
