Obituary for POPE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 24, 2013

POPE, WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN Age 71, partner, father, guitarist, author and enthusiast, died February 15, 2013 in Albuquerque, NM. Bill Pope was born on February 2, 1942 in St. Helena, CA to Eleanor B. and Earl H. Pope. He is survived by his partner, Pam Barncastle; his three children, Christine Silloway, Jennifer Pope and Michael Pope; and his granddaughter Keira Silloway. Bill came from a long line of decorated Naval officers and is a direct decedent of Roger Sherman who signed the Declaration of Independence, Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman and astronomer Edmond Halley of Halley's comet fame. He was proud of this family legacy and it fueled his interest in history, both human and beyond. He graduated from UNM in 1976 with a Bachelor of University Studies degree and again from the University of Albuquerque in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Bill co-authored a book called Ice Age Animals of the Rio Grande Valley (Natural Sales Ltd., 1975) and a chart of the geologic time for the central New Mexico area. To know Bill was to know his passions: flamenco guitar, paleontology, archeology, astronomy, gardening and, later in his life, caring for adults with special needs. He had a gift for making people smile with his generosity of spirit and his wonderful, quirky sense of humor; his favorite limerick was "A diner while dining at Crewe/ Found a very large mouse in his stew./ Said the waiter, 'Don't shout/ And wave it about,/ Or the rest will be wanting one too." He was an avid reader and knew a little (sometimes a lot) about almost every subject in the world. Bill, his humor and his guitar will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
