Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 24, 2013

MAFIT, SUE A. 1921-2013 age 92, a resident of Los Lunas formerly of Albuq., passed away peacefully in her home on February 15, 2013. She was born in 1921 in Happy Texas, to Roy A. and Janie C. Rogers. She spent her childhood in Canyon, Texas, where her father was a home builder until the depression. To find work, her family moved west to New Mexico. In 1936 Sue enrolled in AHS where she made life long friends. She graduated in 1939. Sue worked for Sears during WWII where she earned enough money to buy a new car that she claimed remained new for four years, due to the war effort. Sue loved people and she never met a stranger. No matter where she went or how old she was, Sue made friends everywhere. While attending UNM she met and married Jack Mafit. They both worked at Sandia National Labs until the birth of their only child, Thiel Suzanne. Sue was a wonderful loving mother, fantastic cook and accomplished seamstress. Sue loved her friends, pets and above all her family. Her hobbies included fishing, drawing, painting, crafting, games of all kinds and collecting old things. Sue grew to love New Mexico and all it has to offer. She invited everyone around her to enjoy life through her eyes. The clouds, the mountains, a new flower on a spring day, a bird singing in the tree, our New Mexico sunsets; Sue loved life, never taking one minute for granted. For many years Sue was active in the PTA and Coronado Club. Sue owned and operated Sunset Grocery in Albuq's. south valley for 17 years. She loved all the people she came to know in her store. Sue would close every Wed. at l:00pm to have lunch with the Lovely Ladies, a group of neighborhood widows. This continued for over 25 years. Sue also kept in contact with the "girls from AHS class of 1939", meeting for lunch several times a year, until they were all in their late 80's. Sue was a devoted daughter. She cared for her mother Janie until 1995 when Janie died. Sue then moved to Los Lunas to live with Thiel and her family where she became active with the LL Senior Center and made many new friends. A character among us, she was spirited, funny, generous, caring, happy and loving. Sue will be dearly missed. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Jack; her parents Roy and Janie Rogers; and her only sibling Roy Rogers, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Thiel and son-in-law, Anthony Baca and their sons Jacob Baca and Matthew Baca, all of Los Lunas. A private service was held at Sunset Memorial Mausoleum in Albuq. To honor Sue please send any memories you would like to share to her family home or e-mail to atjmbaca@msn.com
