Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday February 15, 2013

JOHNSON, MARK ALBERT On February 11th, Mark Albert Johnson, age 52, passed away at his home. He was born in Lowell, MA on May 29, 1960 and lived in Albuquerque after four years in the Navy. Mark achieved his Associate's Degree in Landscape Architecture and owned Simply Handy and Fresco Glass, creating custom dalle de verre glass art. His nephew, Jed Vickers, worked very closely with him. Mark was a thoughtful man with a warm heart, beautiful smile, and that Johnson sense of humor that always made friends and family laugh. He was an accomplished juggler with no fear of flaming objects, and well known for his love of games and competition, and frequently rewrote the rules as the game progressed. He felt strongly about addiction recovery and donated a large glass art to the Heroin Awareness Committee fundraiser for an adolescent treatment facility. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Wallace E. Johnson; brother, Peter Johnson; and brother-in-law, Scott Cassidy. He is survived by his mother, Nancy M. Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA; as well as siblings and spouses, Susan Mackey Andrews and Fred Andrews of Dover-Foxcroft, ME, Linda Dashnaw of Shrewsbury, MA, Betsy Cassidy of Virginia Beach, David and Marie Johnson of North Adams, MA and Kathy Johnson and Vince Hopkins of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, including Jed Vickers of Albuquerque, NM who worked with Mark; Ellen and Brian Love, James Vickers of Albuquerque, NM; Robert and Kindel Stubblefield of Killeen, TX and Lee Stubblefield of Buda, TX; Sydney and John Haggerty of Dover-Foxcroft; Jessamyn Mackey of Portland, ME; Jennifer Johnson in Nairobi, Kenya; Eric and Sonja Johnson of Shrewsbury, MA; Matthew Johnson of Boston, MA; Meagan Dunton, Brennan and Megan Cassidy and Devan and Josh Colbaugh of Kingman, AZ; Ryan and Lisa Cassidy of Virginia Beach, VA; and Melissa and David Leeds of Savannah, GA. He is also survived by eight great-nephews and six great-nieces. We would like to thank all friends of the family and especially, Gaye Roth, for her role as Mark's creative partner for so many years. Among Mark's many friends who were dear to his heart were Thomas Sommer (Bo), Ray Van Why, Nicholas Martin Stead, Rick Paul, Doug Flynn, Paul Connery and Rob Robinson. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 19th, 6:00pm at Daniel's Funeral Home, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE. Donations may be made in Mark's memory to the Heroin Awareness Committee, PO Box 56632, Albuquerque, NM 87187.
