Obituary for BERMUDEZ

BERMUDEZ, JOE age 87, joined Our Heavenly Father on Tuesday January 8, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Joe was born March 25, 1925 in Manzano, New Mexico to Felix and Anita Bermudez. He wed the love of his life, Tonie Ortiz, on June 9, 1944. In 1951 at the age of 26, Joe joined the Laborers International Union of North America Local 16 where he dedicated his life to improving the lives of the working class. Not only within the state of New Mexico but throughout the world his mission was to improve the quality of life of individuals through organized labor, cooperatives, housing or educational development. Through the American Institute for Free Labor Development, branch of LIUNA, Joe, with his family, pursued his objectives in Central and South America. Joe was instrumental in the planning and construction of many Laborer Training Programs. He did not fully retire until the age of 78 and was awarded for being the most active retiree of LIUNA. Joe had an appreciation for his family and music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, accordion, organ and various musical instruments. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping with his family. His voice will forever be remembered. He put his heart and love into every song he sang. Joe is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Tonie Bermudez; children, Jim Bermudez and spouse, Mary Louise, Isabel Casaus and spouse, Michael, Rachel Mora and spouse, Robert, Julie Gonzales and spouse, Bobby, and Linda Pacheco; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Jack Bermudez and spouse, Naomi; sister, Delfinia Gonzales; and many nephews and nieces. His death was preceded by his parents, Felix and Anita Bermudez; his brothers, Eugenio and Luciano Bermudez; and sister Rayitos Benavidez. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel. As Joe lived his life, he wanted his death to be meaningful. He donated his remains to medical education and research. He believed countless lives may be saved and quality of life improved by the selfless gift of whole body donation.
