RYE, ROBERT RAY Born on March 8, 1935 in Memphis, TN and passed away in Albuquerque, NM on November 6, 2012. He was preceded in death by his mother, Venice Pearl (Akers); his father, John Robert Rye; and his wife Rosemary (Haynes) Rye. He is survived by his brother, Charlie Rye; five children: Joe Hunt, Jana Newton, LeighAnn Fieweger, Sallie Amstadt and her husband Joe, and Patty Campbell; eight grandchildren: Nathaniel, Luke, Rachael, Sarah, Tessa, Marissa, Julie, and Jessica and his dog, Lucky. Bob served in the US Army from 1956-59. He graduated from Memphis State University with a BS in Chemistry and a BS in Physics and from Iowa State with a PhD in Physical Chemistry. At Iowa State, Bob met and married the love of his life, Rosemary Haynes. Bob was a professor of Chemistry at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY before moving his family to NM to begin his career as a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories. Bob was an inventor on numerous patents and was published extensively. Upon retirement, he published a book 'The Southern Family of Rye' and focused on his passions: taking world freighter cruises, reading, trains and family. Bob was a prolific reader and would say that he was Barnes and Noble's best customer. He was a life-long learner and instilled the love of reading and education in his family. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the book store and if they did not pick out enough books, he would complain that he was not properly being taken advantage of and would send them back for more. Bob was a huge family man and was loved and adored by all and he will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 4:00pm at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Strong-Thorne Chapel 1100 Coal Ave. SE in Albuquerque, NM.
