Obituary for STANTON

WILLIS A. Willis died peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2012 in Santa Fe, one day short of his 98th birthday. Willis was born February 26, 1914 to George and Mary Stanton at Buckhorn, Wyoming, his family's homestead near Sundance. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the Army in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre and was a prisoner of war in Germany. Following the war, Willis worked for the National Park Service at Devil's Tower National Monument and Yellowstone National Park. In Yellowstone, he met Agnes Hotchkiss, and he and Agnes were married in 1948. With their two sons, they moved to Albuquerque in 1956, where Willis worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until his retirement in 1971. Willis moved to Santa Fe in 2009. Willis was a long-time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, where he was active in the Jolly Elders. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Willis was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes and his son, Jay. He is survived by his son, Alan Stanton and wife, Doreen of Santa Fe; daughter-in-law, Laurie Stanton Theiler of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Carrie and Elena Stanton of Albuquerque, and Brian and Christina Stanton of Santa Fe; two great-grandchildren, Nikki and Amber Stanton of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at French Lomas Chapel. Ennichement will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park.
