Obituary for MEILLEUR

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday February 17, 2012

DAVID MICHAEL Requiescat in Pacem Son of Steven and Joan Meilleur, husband of Monica Lynn Hoy Meilleur, and brother of Peter Charles Meilleur, died on Tuesday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico. David was a brilliant shooting star, with the heart and soul of a poet. He loved music of all kinds, and was a talented interpreter on the violin and guitar. He will be missed by all whose hearts he touched. We will all remember him Gratefully for the time we had with him here on Earth. May he rest in peace. David received his Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2007, and was a member of the State Bar of New Mexico since 2007. He created his own position as an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Nancy L. Simmons, through his exceptional and invaluable work on behalf of civil rights and criminal defense clients, beginning as a clerk and continuing as one of two attorneys in the office. He was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico in 2007, and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in 2009. He was the first in his law school class to argue before the Tenth Circuit. He once represented a client who was arrested for driving while intoxicated, who in fact was demonstrating symptoms of multiple sclerosis, and fought mightily and almost constantly for the right of environmental groups to have access to public documents. David's compassion for the underdog and his good natured approach towards the practice of law and towards his many opponents set him apart. David graduated magna cum laude from Bucknell University with a BA in English Literature and Economics in 2004. He received the University Prize for Men "for the man showing the greatest proficiency in English composition and literature," and was inducted as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He and Monica were violinists in the Bucknell University Symphony Orchestra, and both remain devoted Bisons. His passion for Lobo Basketball in the Pit is legend, and is shared by Monica, Peter, and Steve. A Memorial Service and celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 1:00pm, at the Chamisa Hills Country Club (formerly Rio Rancho Country Club), 500 Country Club Drive SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124, and feel free to bring your singing voices and instruments to give David a musical send-off.
