Obituary for LAZAR

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 11, 2011

MARGIE Born in 1915, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, December 9, 2011. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Allen; brothers Morris Berg, Manual Berg, Robert Berg, Clarice Ball, Harold Berg, and Jack Berg. She is survived by her sons, Arthur (Olga Ascoli Safar), Norman (Betsy Vincent) and Robert Lazar (Barbara J. Lazar); and daughter Lisa Dennis (Rick Dennis); Margie has 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Margie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Nacha and Michael Berg. Margie's mother, along with her seven children, entered the U.S. as undocumented immigrants and moved to Chicago when Margie was a child-a stigma that stayed with her until she became a naturalized citizen in 1948. This was one of Margie's happiness moments. Early in her life she became interested in drama, stage, and radio. Through a WPA project she took acting lessons and became a member of the Chicago Mummers stemming out of Northwestern University. In Albuquerque, Margie was a regular performer at the Albuquerque Little Theatre. She married her Allen after a romantic courtship, and settled in New Mexico in 1937 where she raised four children and worked alongside Al in the family business. As a resilient breast cancer survivor, Margie spent many years volunteering for the American Cancer Society under the Reach For Recovery Program. She also enjoyed serving as a Museum of Albuquerque docent and participated in the NM Senior Olympics where she received many medals for her swimming accomplishments. Margie was a very loving person who always had a smile on her face. Throughout her life she loved to read and listen to classical music. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed by many. We will miss her smiles! Graveside service will take place at Fairview Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana N.E., 87110, or the American Cancer Society, Reach For Recovery Program.
