SALLIE Age 89, died Monday, November 21, 2011. She was born Sarah Ann Van Buren on January 13, 1922, in Glen's Fall, New York. She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, and the American Academy of Art in Chicago, studying fashion design and illustration. She also worked on the Chicago Herald Star and other newspapers. On February 18, 1950 she married James Edmund Pennybacker in White Plains, New York. They toured Europe before moving to Frankfurt, Germany, where two daughters, Susan Michele and Deborah Carol were born. In 1959 the family moved to Albuquerque where Mrs. Pennybacker was active in the Girl Scout Council and then in organizing horse shows and related activities. In 1982 she began a monthly magazine, the Horseman's Voice, which she published for 17 years. Later she wrote a weekly column, called "Country Comment" for the Albuquerque Journal Westside edition. Throughout her life in New Mexico she advocated the provision of riding trails throughout the North Valley and the preservation of rural life in the Village of Los Ranchos. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Kuliasha and husband, Michael Priestap, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Debbie Tissot and husband, Ralph of Albuquerque; grandson, Ian Kuliasha and wife, Jasmine of Boulder, Colorado; grandson, Cary Kuliasha of Knoxville. She is also survived by her Beagles, Ryan and Toby. Burial will follow in the Santa Fe National Cemetery where her late husband, James Edmund Pennybacker is buried.
