Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 23, 2011

JUNE VOGEL Mom, June, Junie, Ju Ju passed away peacefully on September 5, 2011. She was surrounded by her loving children. June was born in Spokane, Washington, on March 26, 1921, the daughter of Harold Vogel and Mildred Sharp Vogel. After graduating from high school, she attended nursing school and became a registered nurse. She subsequently was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. While serving in a military hospital in San Francisco, California, she met her future husband, Captain Donald W. Eakin, U.S. Army Air Corps, who had been medivaced for wounds incurred while flying a B-17 in the South Pacific. They were married two weeks later and went on to have three children. In 1968, June moved to San Diego, California. Upon retiring from Scripps Hospital in 1986, she was able to fulfill a love of travel and see most of the world. She loved animals and was a long-time volunteer at the Animal Humane Association, sharing animals with patients and shut-ins. In 2004, she returned to Albuquerque for a wonderful seven years with family. June was preceded in death by her daughter Jan Eakin Beary. She is survived by her son, Randy Eakin and wife Redd; her daughter, Lynne Eakin Clevenger and husband Larry; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Thankfully, her family was able to gather recently for a surprise 90th birthday party. Sadly, just a few months later she was to pass away following a sudden short illness. She will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place and a private Christian burial will take place in the future when all of the family is able to gather. Donations may be made to Animal Humane Association of New Mexico or a charity of your choice.
